went last weekend to helt a buddy who broke down in the sequoias...he had his truck towed home then i went up and towed his 32 ft toybox home.....little history of my truck....i put a buggy on my truck and 1 in the toy box...so everything on my truck is beefy.....3 extra springs ,air bags ,toyo mt e rated 10 ply tires....anyway it was a hot day maybe 95 deg....and his class 5 hich wouldnt fit my reciever ....so we used his old one with no weight distrubution....anyway it took about an hour to get off the mountain..when we got down we had to stop for fuel....and i checked the rear wheels and tires......man the rim was so hot i couldnt touch it for more then 1-2 sec....and the tire i could touch way longer .,....but it was about hot as my hand could handle.....dont have girlie hands....any way finally here is my question....why did they get so hot ,,,was it all the brakeing comming down the mountain...is this normal.....oh 1 more thing....the other car that was following us was just a hot....david

Sounds like you need more braking on the trailer, with an auto tranny you don't get any engine braking down hill.

95 outside, solid hour of lots of braking...yea - not only the heat from the brakes but also the tire plus the sun on it...I believe it.
Trailer wheels will do the same thing with lots of braking - in fact more cause there is more metal with drum brakes and less air circulating around. You check the fronts, too?

Put on an exhaust brake and TC lockup and the hills will get samller (down hill anyway). I use my E brake all the time and rarely use the service brakes. I'm 20K GCW and there are lots of hills around here. My .02

I had my cables freeze one me once and I had to drive about 20 miles to get a pair of bolt cutters.
Everything was very hot when I got home. Tires, wheels, drums, axle housing, etc etc etc.

OK, now I see what you are talking about. You mean the Emergency/parking brake. I am talking about an exhaust brake. With the hand shaker in 5th gear (direct drive) I can roll down a 7% grade at 60mph or less without the use of the service brakes. My weight is a hair under 20K. I wouldn't be without the exhaust brake.

i think your "." button is on fire for one lol but back to the subject, yes is is the brakes. i know this because i have had the same problem. going down a mountain with no exhaust brake is pretty harsh on the brakes. and my neighbor was driving around in his 99 with his caliper pistons rubbing directly on his rotor and u talk about a hot rim.
