PRODIGY Code 5H

Anyone familiar with PRODIGY Break Controler Code 5H ?? - "Prodigy detects brake wire short during idle condition (flashing)"

27K towing with this controler with no problems till this. Brakes work on both 5'ver and Sno-Pro trailers with NO change in braking effectiveness. It flashes the code whenever plugged in...hooked up or solo...idling or driving.

I have an e-mail into Tekonsha's tech support...but until then...Any ideas where to start looking for the "break wire short"?? All thoughts welcomed.

Re: PRODIGY Code 5H

I'm having the same problem with my Prodigy. I thought I'd reply to get this back up to the top. I'm looking for suggestions on what to check first. I know it's a short somewhere. It's intermittent when I hit bumps. It doesn't do it sitting in the driveway where I can check it.

Re: PRODIGY Code 5H

I contacted Tekonsha's tech support and they're sending me a new one...The Prodigy has a lifetime warranty. TEKONSHA

Your symptoms sound different. Same code SH? Does it show code when NOT connected to trailer? Mine did...which told me it wasn't trailer related anyway.

If I had your symptoms I'd check out the pigtail to OEM under-dash connection...and then proceed checking all wires to rear plug.

Good luck...

Re: PRODIGY Code 5H

Only when plugged in and only intermittent. I'm planning on working from the tuck connection back and checking all of the connections and the grounds. I was having problems with an old controller. I replaced it with the Prodigy. The Prodigy confirms that I have a wiring or ground problem somewhere, I just can't find it. The cost of the Prodigy vs. paying for a diagnostic at a trailer shop paid for itself. I just need to find exactly where the problem is now.

Re: PRODIGY Code 5H

I had the same code, turned out to be a short in the magnets . Replaced all four for $93.00 and all is well , great brakes and no codes. I worked on this problem for 36 hours. all magnets tested good when cold 3.2_3.6 OHMS. I pulled the trailer apart to trace blue wire, I my took my truck to the dealer to test for shorts. Try the Magnets

Re: PRODIGY Code 5H

Check the wires where the manufacturer hooks up the brakes. They use those quick connects and will sometimes leave a short piece of wire hang out after making the connection. This wire will sometimes be turned up and make contact with the frame and then it will show a short. It's a longshot, but it has happened to me!

Re: PRODIGY Code 5H

Mine had the same thing, and it was a problem in the wire going into the axle tube. It'd short over bumps.

it's not 5H, it's SH, for SHort.

I really doubt it's the controller, you have a brake problem.

Re: PRODIGY Code 5H

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I was finally able to get under my truck after shoulder surgery two weeks ago. The genius that wired the original brake controller for the previous owner left some exposed wires under the dash. They were touching a metal bracket. Made a trip to Seattle yesterday - no problems. Thanks again.
