Prodigy Controller Question

Getting ready to install a Prodigy controller to use with my 18' equipment trailer and wanted to ask a question. I understand the process for doing the inital setup and fine tuning....but wondered if you need to do this twice.... one setup for when the trailer is empty...and then one when it's loaded.... how do y'all handle the 2 different setups?

Thanks!

I did it on an empty trailer and when I put my IH 1066 on the trailer I just hooked up and left. Did not re-adjust anything and it seemed to stop just fine. Probably wouldn't hurt to do it with the load though, especially if you are pulling a camper or something.

Re: Prodigy Controller Question

I just made the one initial setup with the trailer empty. Then I set the controller to either boost1 or boost2 depending on the load.

I have screwed with it a few times and found the above the way to go. I set it with my toyhauler empty and then just adjust the boost according to how much junk I am dragging (obviously this is just a guess). But also, I have yet to even go over like 5.0-5.5 when braking and that was a pretty hard one in traffic. Gotta love the Prodigy!!!

Re: Prodigy Controller Question

I have a question, is the readout really showing voltage or more likely amps. It seems most everyone refers to it as voltage, but I would suspect amps would the variable factor in controlling the strength of the braking action.

Re: Prodigy Controller Question

i think it is voltage...afaik the brakes don't ever see battery voltage...

It's voltage. You're right, amperage would be a bit more useful than voltage, but it's much simpler to control the amperage by varying the voltage, than keep the voltage constant and vary the amperage. It's the number of electrons flowing through the magnet coil, or amperage, that determines the magnetic field strength and the resulting force that throws out the brake shoes against the drum liner. Voltage hints at amperage, because the magnet coil has a certain fixed resistance, and if you can maintain a higher voltage across that resistance, you know for certain the amperage that must be flowing.

The best controllers out there (like BrakeSmart or whatever it's called now) display both voltage, amperage, and a few other things ... like a Christian "motivational message of the day" if I recall. This information is really only useful for detecting problems. The actual numbers are pretty meaningless if the controller is stopping your rig well.
