Pulling 10k, what speed do you all maintain goin up hills in your PSD's?
I pulled my new car trailer this past weekend for the first time and it weighs about 10k (est), i havent taken it to a scale yet. I was just wondering what speed the rest of you all maintain pulling this kind of load up hills? I was able to maintain 45-50mph in 4th gear, one steep hill I had to downshift to 3rd, and I think i was down to about 40mph. What about you all?

Dang, 170! Is that a 2-car trailer? Oh, yeah, you've probably got your Typhoon in there (3900 lbs)... I haven't towed my trailer since I added the mods in my sig line, but bone stock with a total GVW of 26,400 lbs I was down to around 40 mph on the worst grades when driving cross-country. With my truck as it sits now, hauling my camper (12,000 total GVW) I was able to climb 6% grades in 3rd gear as fast as I was willing to spin the engine (around 3100 rpm, 65 mph).
Drop me a line when you are ready to get your gauges - I'd be happy to get a fellow Typhoon owner a good guy deal. 800-888-8065.

4 tons of hay and 2200 Lb trailer so 10200 total,I pull any grades on the passes around here at 65+ in high (not OD) at about 2800 RPM or less. The RPM can vary as the T/C doesn't lock in this condition, once it unlocks and shifts out of OD it will not lock until back in OD. Yes a programer will fix this in the future but until then I have learned to live with it.

If you have ever been up saluda hill in SC on route 26, mine drags down to 45 pulling the 10 K 5th wheel.
I don't keep it hammered by any means.

That's pretty good, I haven't gone that way with my rig yet.
Been up and down Saluda Mt. hundreds of times, (it's in NC btw) mostly in 18 wheelers. Used to haul apples out of Hendersonville, NC down Saluda in the late '60's before I-26 was completed.
After 26 was completed would drag up that mountain at 10mph. Spent a lot of time on that stretch of road, drove trucks out of Charleston, SC and traveled it every night for months on end.
You ain't lived until you've realized that the 1974 Mack with 48,000# of logs has come out of gear and now is going too fast to get back in gear. I tried to keep it slowed down as much as possible with the brakes but had no brakes on the steering axle to help. Saw the needle on the speedo go all the way around and hit the peg on the back side. Luckily the 3 wide lanes and emergency lanes allowed some mountain driving as I tried to straighten out the road. Got her down in one piece and learned to always keep my hand on the gear stick in the mountains. That ride was in 1977 and I still keep my hand on the stick today. Earlier that day I got a fine for being overweight on I-40 and they made me drop my trailer and go to the truckstop to get enough money to pay it.

10 K horse trailer empty. You do not want to know how much it weighs with horses, tack, water and hay. I set the cruise control at 65 mph (2000 rpm with the 4.10 rear end) and relax. I tuck in behind some of the semis and just go. I just got better than 12.5 mpg at that speed.

The torque converter always stays locked on mine after it shifts or I shift it out of od Even If i take off with the od off the tc will lock up after it gets cooking

I will be heading up the Saluda grade with our Travel Trailer, (10K) on our way to East TN on June 2nd, I'M waiting to see what the new 06 will do. My 02 7.3L had NO problem doing 65 MPH up it.

Re: Pulling 10k, what speed do you all maintain goin up hills in your PSD's?
I haven't been on any real big hills with my dually, yet....
Wandering around Sylva, NC, west of Asheville, I kept mine at 60MPH. Mine would drop into 3rd gear from time to time, depending on the grade. Raton Pass on I-25 on the New Mexico / Colorado state line is a 5-6% pull for a long time. In my 2000 7.3 F-250 with 3:73 rear, I started up the pass at 60 MPH, and was at 30 in 2nd gear by the time I got to the top. Not sure just how long a pull it was, but I sure remember it being L O N G......
Will know what the 4:10 rear end will do later this Autumn. I've gone up lots of hills on non-interstate roads where I would get down to 2nd gear and I could keep the rig going 30-40 MPH. Never, as yet, got to where I was climbing in 1st gear.
It seems that the 7.3 engine gets really powerfull around 2700 RPM...you just have to wait a bit to get where you're going.
As an aside, I've gone down several mountains in 2nd gear, jumping on and off the brakes as I descend. Down is much scarier than up, at least for this Florida Cracker.

Re: Pulling 10k, what speed do you all maintain goin up hills in your PSD's?
On grades, I don't let the rpm's drop below 1900. I try to keep it between 1900 & 2400 range. The odd time I'll let it get up to about 2700 before tackling a grade, but I don't take it up any higher than than. Someone on this board said that they don't recommend taking them above 2800!
From Ontario to Florida, usually I only have to drop 1 gear thru the mnts' in the Virginia's, the odd time I might get down into 3'rd climbing the hills on Route 19 in W. Va., between Hwy 79 & 77.
