i have 1999 f350 dually diesel. i plan on hauling my horses around in a gooseneck trailer. the truck seems to sit quite high and didnt know if that would cause a problem having a 5th wheel hitch installed. how much clearance should i have? is there a way i can tell by measuring the height of the bed? does any one know. i heard that ford made the 99's higher by putting a spacer in the rear end, is this true? any help at all.

Melissa, I know there will be other posters, but just in case, the general rule of thumb is 5-6" from the top of the bed to the bottom of the 5th wheel overhang. The duallies sit a bit higher in the rear for almost all of the 99 and above trucks. Watch out for the turns in a shortbed, real easy to turn and have the 5th wheel take out a corner of the cab or rear window. There are hitches that will take care of that as well.

It might be a problem. I ended up lowering my '99 by taking out the 4" spacer and putting in a 2", lowering it 2". I found that on certain angles, the trailer will hit the truck bed if the clearance is not high enough. I don't know what it is supposed to be, but once I lowered my '99, it never hit again. Most situations will not be a problem though, especially if you only tow on road, not off road.

You should have no problem pulling the trailer. My father has a 2000 very similar to yours and has no problems pulling our 35' cattle trailer.

Melissa, I pull a fifth wheel with my truck and about 6" is a good average. Keep an eye on your trailer when backing off a level area down an incline or coming up an incline onto a level area. I found that I needed to adjust my hitch up for additional clearance because of a difficult driveway.
If you have a short bed take a look at Pullrite Superglide. It can take alot of heartache out of backing and turning.
