I'm borrowing a 7500 gvw horse trailer that will be towed with my F350 Extra-cab, short bed. The hitch that my friend has is one set up for weight distribution bars (rated 1200tw and 12,000 trailer weight), but they have not been using the bars at all anymore because they feel they aren't needed (originally used on a F150 size truck now on F350 size truck). However, the hitch shank is about 18" long and sticks out of the truck quite a way. I do have the "titan" type 2 1/2" receiver so I don't think I will have a problem there, but what about the strength of the drawbar itself sticking out that far with no wd bars? I don't think that my friend has had any handling problems with this setup, but I'm just being cautious. Thanks.
If they were my horses, I wouldn't even consider hauling them without the proper setup.

I personaly feel you need to buy your own ball mount to use that trailer. I run a 18" custom built ball mount on a custom built receiver without any WD or anti-sway with great results but that's with a lwb SRW and DRW now. It works better on the DRW because of the 172"wb than it did on the SRW 158"wb.
I think the 18" will unload your front axle too much on a swb SRW and you will not like the way it pulls.

Buy UNION work UNION. It pays off in the long run Define Union: A labor Union is nothing more than united workers with a common goal for better working conditions.
We all are in some sort of labor Union, some are just larger than others with better working conditions!
ditto, purchase and use the appropriate drawbar. safety first!
i use a similar trailer and with two horses on board i would use the wd hitch setup. if i tow unloaded i do not use the wd hitch setup and have a reasonable ride. but, when empty or fully loaded the wd hitch setup greatly improves stability, so???. also, get a sway control device.
mho.
merry Christmas...happy towing.

Hi cb1,
Is your hitching rated for 1000lbsTW and 8kGVW without using WD?
From the commerical made hitching that I've seen, I would not fudge on the mfg rated numbers. I have not seen your pictular hitching tho, so I'm taking a swag, but Fords stock hitching would not handle that weight for very long without using WD.
