Raising trailer 2"...advise and effects on towing

My last outing w/the TT indicated that I need to stay on flat terrain or lift the TT up. It drug several times while we made our way back into the camp site. I'm not big on designated sites and know finding my own back in the boonies is more realistic. So, I need to raise the TT up several inches. The axles currently sit under the spring packs and the shackles are not adjustable. Can I just add a 2" block/longer u-bolts under each axle and be good? Also, with the added height, I would imagine it will affect the towing characteristics?

Thanks,
Lane

Re: Raising trailer 2"...advise and effects on towing

I installed 2" blocks and longer u bolts over 2 years ago on my 28' 5th wheel. I have towed thousands of miles like this, even on some rough dirt roads and have not had any problems. Other people will chime in and tell you not to do it, but it works on my application. Did not notice any side affects, just a higher step height. Also, consider going to a larger tire height like a 235-85-16 with load range E. I did this last week, went from a 225-75-15 and it gave me an additional 2".

Just one quick comment, if you're raising the back of the trailer up, don't forget to raise the front too!

YOu need the trailer level or you may have a tire issue, i.e., too much weight on a specific axle.

In my case, the front of the trailer was a bit higher than the back (not much either) and I suspect that was the reason I kept blowing the rear axle tires on the trailer when towing on really hot days.

We had the same trouble with some stock trailers.

Ditched the 4" drop-axles in favor of straight axles; and, if anything, they pull better.

After this lesson, we always specify straights.

It doesn't sound like much; but, four inches is a bunch of difference.
