Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

I hear what you guys are saying. I've got to change my driving habits. The old Mack or even the new Mack Vision, we basically bang the rev limiter until you're moving. I don't need to do that in my PDS, but I've got start running into the 2,500 range huh.

[/ QUOTE ]
Don't be afraid to take it up to the 3000 to 3200 RPM range. It will shift just before it starts to hit the rev limiter. These 7.3 PSDs will take this all day long and more.

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

Hi tginz,

[ QUOTE ]
...1. I have NO experience towing with this size truck coupled with this size load...

[/ QUOTE ]

You pretty well sumed up your problem. Hard to expect a vehicle weighing 15k GCW to run up hills like it can when empty.

To prove this point to your self, pull the same trailer on the same road with your PSD, then go pull the same load and road with your gasser. You will quickly see the PSD will easyly out pull the gasser.

I pull 16k GCW from 1800ft to 11000ft thru the Colorado Rockies and my PSD has no problems. I get 14.1mpg while pulling by maximum torque RPM, 1600rpm. There's not a gasser around that can do that!

On a 7% grade while in 6th gear pulling 16k GCW, I can not maintain 1600rpm but I can in 5th gear with torque to spare.

Below is a direct quote from Ford about engine lugging in the F650/750 owners manual:

[ QUOTE ]

Excessive full throttle operation below peak torque RPM will shorten engine life to overhaul and can cause serious engine damage. Operation of the engine below peak torque RPM can occur during gear shifting due to difference of gear ratios.

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't try and bounce mine off the rev limiter, but as others have said drop that puppy out of OD and "MASH IT" and just watch your pre turbo EGT and don't let it get above 1250. I do this all the time towing when going up hills and when the cruise doesn't look like it will hold the speed I disengage the cruise, let off the go pedal for just a second and drop out of OD before my rpms drop below 2000 and get the beast up into the 2700 to 3000 range and "HANG ON" ... cause she's sure going to pull the "snot" out of whatever is tailgating you. The best pulling power I've found is in the 2500 to 3000 rpm range with my target being between 2700 and 2800 rpms. I don't like to let the tranny drop out of OD under a load while pouring on the coal since that downshift can be a little harsh on the tranny and drivetrain, even with the tranny that I have.

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

This is my first post, but I have been reading on here for months. I have to admit, I felt the exact same way when I towed with my 7.3 yesterday for the first time. I sold my '04 Cummins 4 months ago because of the payments, and bought a 2000 CC 4wd 6spd with 78K on it. My Cummins pulled my 12,000# car trailer with ease, and had a lot of power left. My 7.3 is weak in comparison, but it is just because of how much less torque the 7.3 makes. I bought the ford instead of an older dodge for many reasons. Mainly the dependability of everything else on the truck, the huge cab, looks, and because I race a ford.

Yesterday I felt like I was really driving the truck hard. I am going to have to do a program, intake and exhaust. I am just afraid that then the clutch will have to be replaced. Will that most likely be the case.

Your Ford will pull just as good as your Dodge. It just takes more RPM's.

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

Tginz, simple mods can make a world of a difference! (i.e. fuel mods & TC lock up mod) Do the in tank, pre-pump, FP shim mod, and TC-lock up mod and you wont be sorry!!! All these mods can be done for less than $180 or so. If you dont do the pre-pump filter, all this can be done for less than $50!!! Again, like others have said- "Hammer down, please!" Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

Yes Tgenz you need to change your driving habits. My dad owns a moving company and he pulls 25K plus all the time with his PSD's. He normally runs in the 2400 to 2900 RPM range when he needs the power to take on the hills and one of his truck just hit 450K miles.

My truck very rarely ever sees less the 2K RPM loaded or empty. Put the petal to the metal and enjoy the power. Your truck will run better then ever.

Have fun,

Mad Max

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

Gee, a dead stock 7.3 (like yours) is no rocket ship. Perhaps it will make more sense to you if you realize that hooking up an 8000 lb trailer is no different from driving the truck by itself with HALF the power. If you want it to run like it does by itself when hooked to an 8000 lb trailer, you need to DOUBLE the power. There's something called the laws of physics and they even apply to you.

You should be able to safely increase torque for towing by 25% with a tuner. The next 25% costs 10 times as much. Beyond that, it starts to cost real money.

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

why would you be afraid to take it above 2000 rpms? thats rediculas, put your foot into it and you will have power. i run mine agianst the redline regularly 170,000 miles to date runs better than ever. my father is worse than i am on his truck and his has 240,000 miles. and if its stock don't worry about egts at all. i've towed 10,000lbs+ all through NY including the adirondacks and new england, and you just can't be afraid to step on the gas.

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

Towing any load will produce high EGT's if you are trying to stay at 2000 rpm! What you are doing is requiring the engine to do work on limited fuel and air mixture. Floor it and let the truck do what it is designed to do.
I towed a 32 foot 5th wheel for 4 years and 60K miles with little or no complaints.
I now tote a Lance 1130 and boy does it make that crew cab look small! But it actually runs a lot better when loaded.
I have never (in 106,000 miles and 5 years) had a problem with the truck when load. The weird things always happen when unloaded!

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

A programmer or a chip will make a lot of difference. I tow a 36' 5er that puts me right at 20000# GCW and the truck pulls like a beast. It will run 70 MPH all day long if you want to. Mine is a dog on te hills if you let it drop much below 2000RPM so drop out of OD and put your foot in it.

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

Yea what Ken said!!
You need to spin some RPM for the beast to pull. My personal sweet spot with mods below is in the 2700 to 2850 range. Pulls like a freight train there. Just have to watch my tranny temp but Richert 69 is going to take care of that as soon as I have his intake for the drag car finished!! I was a lugger also until you finally hear enough times that these things need to spin some RPM to pull. Now I am a true convert to the "spin her up and get er done"!!

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

Tginz - Sounds familiar when I first towed with my 01. I now have an 05, but still have a Superchips Microtuner which I used on my 01. It firmed up the trans shifts and gave me extral power for towing on the lowest power setting. Helped alot.

If you are interested in the tuner for your 01 send me a private message or respond here. I have thought about selling it. Ron
