Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

I'm going to offer something a tad different here - but first, as others have said, go ahead and wind the ***** up - 900 is nothing, you have no worries until your past 1250 for a "sustained" period and that extra 300 degrees will make a difference for you.

Now what I suggest you check is this: I don't tow a lot of boats but my boss bought a boat about a year ago that I went to pick up (cause all he has was a GM Duramax )- anyways the trailer had a 6 pin plug so I used a 6 to 7 convertor. Sure I pulled the thing - no smoke anywhere - but it felt like I was dragging a house around. Pulled over and got to checking and found the way the trailer was factory wired - my conversion deal, 6 to 7 pin, was giving the brakes power all the time.

Might be an outside possibility that you could check out -

Ron

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

I have found the same thing on my 7 to6 pin converter.... I'm gonna just take the wires from the 7pin and switch the wires to a 6plug and just leave the 7 not connected.

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

There are two seperate 6 to 7 pin p;ugs for sale. One has the brake in the center, the other has the brake to one of the side pin. If you use the wrong converter your brakes will be on all the time and can over heat to the point of melting all the grease from your wheel bearings... oh, don't ask how I know this

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

I guess I need to add a little water to the fire.

The way you have been driving with the trailer is probably maximizing your fuel mileage. Driving it like you "should" be driving it will probably cost you some fuel.

So your problem is not burning enough fuel when climbing grades or accelerating from a stop. But the fix is to burn more fuel. Which will cost you for the extra fuel.

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

I've had the RPM's on my truck in the RED, these motors are International DT444E's. They are made to take a beating. The Edge EVO with the 1.25.XX Code is a KILLER. It has great power and I can smoke the tires all the way into third (L,1,2). All I can say is WOW. I run about 600 crusing empty, and ~900 when towing my boat. The boat is a 21ft Stratos Coastal Fisherman with a 175 Evinrude. I can pull the doors off any Chebby and Dudge. Like someone said it does take more Pedel to make the power. Remember the inline 6 of the Dudge will make more TQ at a lower RPM, its just the nature of an inline. Plus my truck smokes like a freight train before I build some boost, once I hit 10-15lbs of boost no more smoke but HOLD ON!!!

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

Good grief!! Something is grossly wrong with your truck when towing. Do you actually have an exhaust pressure guage (not a boost guage)? That is rare. A 30 psi backpressure sounds extremely high. Consider that the turbo boost maxes out at 20 - 22 psi. Check exhaust for restrictions; crawl under and make sure the pipe is not mashed somewhere. Check intake for restrictions. There is a guage on the air filter housing which indicates excess filter plugging. I once had a field mouse build a nest in the intake on a 1990; found it before I started the truck. Look at the air filter.
What is the EGT when foot on the floor in 2nd gear up a steep grade towing? Should be 1100 degrees plus, but not over 1300.

Several other replys had gems of suggestions. Running the rpms up beyond 2000 will minimize downshifting. Buying an aftermarket programmer will add a bunch of power (I trust you have guages). But you should have decent enough power without one.
Nothing seems wrong with the trailer; you dragged it around fine with a Buick.
How did you install the trailer brake controller? could you have interfered with the truck PCM somehow? Try towing without connecting the trailer electrically to the truck.
Make sure the truck is running right unloaded; you said you never hot rod it; maybe its not putting out much power empty either.
Did you buy the truck used? Could it have an aftermarket chip in it which has gone bad?
Good luck and keep us posted.
Warren

Let's see if I can add:

40 to 85 is adding about 45

If you are 900 at 40,

then you should be 945 at 85.

Am I right or wrong?

You see a hill coming up get on the pedal early, get into it hard, you will be crusin no problem. From the looks of your sig, that truck is your BABY! detailed, jackstands, etc.... drive that pig hard. Hell, if you blow it up, its still under warranty. Let us know how you make out.. Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

Make sure that she's breathing good. Intake filter, etc. Then make sure that you are staying in the 2000 RPM range. It's okay to hit 1200*F on the EGT's (post turbo). You will find that when you keep the RPM's up that the EGT's will drop, compared to "lugging" the engine.

I have a 7300 lbs 5'er with a pretty much stock truck and only have EGT problems on steep grades like 8% or greater.

You want to hear disappointing....... I checked the brakes, they are free..... I just hooked the boat to my 96 200K mile Buick Roadmaster GM 350 to move it around my shop yard. With the hitch 1/2" off the ground and front wheels just touching the pavement, I went up the street for fun, boy great power, no problem towing. Turning and stopping could be an issue, though.

Bottom line, I own a $50K truck with no power.

Definately must be something wrong there. My '99 F-350 PSD 7.3 was hooked to a 11.5K 5er and I had NO problem going anywhere at speed and that was dead stock, no chips ever....

Have a dealer check your truck. It's NOT doing what it should. I just hope it's something simple (read, cheap)..

Best to you.

What 5er were you towing that weighed 11.5K , it looks like you were towing a 26' Innsbrook 5er after you got rid of your in bed camper with your 99 PSDs and those seem to be in the 8K range. From everything I've read, you hook up a 11.5K anything and you will know it especially with a stock 99 truck and even more so in any kind of hilly terrain. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems your assessment of the 99+ PSD towing powers in a stock configuration is very generous

Thus I'm not sure I agree with your assessment that something is wrong with tginz's truck. I tend to think it's the way he is driving it.

Re: Ready to Cancel Trip GROSSLY DISAPPOINTED w/ Towing!

I felt the same way the first time I towed my boat (same size and weight).
The X had just over 500 miles on it and it felt like the engine was lugging.

Even though peak torque occurs around 1650RPM, I find that it tows best between 1800 and 2000 (Actually does really good at about 2100-2200, but gets very thirsty). Unless I'm in an area where I can maintain 55-60 MPH, I lock out overdrive to keep the RPMs up.

Now that I have changed my driving techniques, no problem. The X just turned 40K miles the other day. No "power" mods.

Other than the dismal performance, how did the X handle when pulling the boat?
