Real Weights of 5'ver

I weighed my rig with the 5'ver on and the 5'ver off to get the 'real' weights.

Weighed at Flying J, Franklin KY, on 10/19/2007
No persons (nor dogs), transfer tank (106 gal) full, 7 gallons from full on regular tank. No water in 5'ver tanks, one propane tank empty and other one nearly empty.

Front Axle w/ trailer: 4420
Front Axle w/o Trailer: 4380
Rear Axle w/ trailer: 6700
Rear Axle w/o trailer: 4140
Trailer Axles: 8280

Gross Combined Vehicle Weight: 19,400 (Rating is 20,000#)
Gross Vehicle (Truck) Weight: 8,280 (Rating is 11,500#)
Gross Vehicle (Truck) Wt w/ TLR: 11,120 (Rating is 11,500#)

I was unpleasantly surprised by the calculated pin weight of 2560# of the 5'ver. But,none of my axles are overloaded. The truck is not overloaded. But when Momma, me, the two dogs, 40 gallons of water and two tanks of propane are added, the rig will exceed 20,000# slightly. Add the generator at 125#.

My trailer is classified as a Rear Kitchen (RK)296 (29'6" long) but it really 31' 10" long. Go figure, the government is involved...

The steel transfer tank full of fuel is about 900#.

What this means is that just about any rig rated over 32'... or with 3 slides.. or a toy hauler, will likely be close to or exceed the Gross Combined Weight Rating of the truck/trailer combo.

Thought this reality check of weights might help some of you when thinking about the truck/trailer combo you want to use.

Re: Real Weights of 5'ver

And you might be over weight on your rear truck tires unless it is a dually. Right now you have 3350 on each of your rear truck tires. Thats over weight on a lot of E rated tires.

Re: Real Weights of 5'ver

Man... that is a lot of pin weight for an 11,000 lb trailer. 24%

I was unpleasantly surprised by the calculated pin weight of 2560# of the 5'ver. </div></div>

Calculate it again.
4380 + 4140 = 8,520 truck GVW w/o trailer
4420 + 6700 = 11,120 truck GVW w/trailer

11,120 minus 8,520 is 2,600 pounds pin weight.

Trailer Axles: 8280 plus pin weight 2,600 = 10,880 trailer GVW.
10,880 divided by 2,600 = 23.9 percent pin weight.

Conclusion: You need to move the 5er hitch forward at least a coupla inches. Your front axle is carrying only 40 pounds of the 2,600 pounds hitch weight. At least 250 pounds of the hitch weight should be on the front axle, and more than that wouldn't hurt.

I wouldn't worry about the 24 percent pin weight. You have enough truck to handle the pin weight without being overloaded. And as you add fresh water and propane and grey water and black water, the percentage will change.
