I have seen a really small trailer ball sitting next to a large 2 inch ball on some trailers. i dont understand what this is for? I have seen it a few time welded to the main hitch on a little mettle plate???

Anyone know what this is for

Re: really small Ball ????

It is a hookup for a friction style sway control.

CLICK HERE to go to an explanation, scroll down and you will see the hookup without sway control installed and a couple of pictures below with sway control. Sway occurs when the trailer swings back and forth behind the tow vehicle. The friction sway control has two plates attached to the trailer and a single bar attached to the small ball you see on the hitch head. You use a bolt or bolts to tighten the "pinch" of the two plates on the one bar to adjust how hard it is to have the trailer go out of line with the tow vehicle, thus adjusting the amount of "sway control" that you have active. It is a pretty primitive but effective system for lighter trailers, it has been in use on heavier trailers for many years.
