rear axle question

hello
i have a 85 ford 250 6.9L diesel,i beleve it is the dana 60 axle if im rembering right.
How much of what fluid goes in to the rear axle?? the stuff that came out when i pulled the axle to clean then drums smelled like YUCK nasty burnt.
what weight?
and how much?

got my self a 1985 F250, international harvister 6.9L 4speed on the floor,rear axle with a detroit automatic locker, 2yd cap dump body inbed, 307,753 miles <odomitor reads olny 7,753,
2inch blocks in rear with extra leaves.

Most Dana 60s will take 80w90 gear oil.

bobtheredneck... Kind of late here, but yes 80/90 weight. Are you sure it is a dana 60, how about a dana 70? I thought 60s were in the front for a 4x4 on Fords. A dana 70 will take around 5 to 6 qts and a 60 will take around 4 to 5 qts.

i agree with steve there i got dana 60 front ford rear with the 10.75 ring gear in the rear if i rember it was around 4 or 5 qrts though but a little extra never hurts and a thin layer of silicone will prevent leakage with the cork gasket

i just bought my first vehicle and it is a 88 f250 with the ambulance package (bigger alternator duel batteries more power etc.) 4x4 7.3l diesel with rebuilt E4OD tranny for towing BIG loads srw with drw axel gets bout 16 mpg (not lieing)

rear is a sterling 10.25. takes 7.5 pints of gear oil.
