reminder to inspect your equipment/trailer

Weird experience happened to me last week I use my trailer (flatdeck) commercially, and I was doing deliveries locally. I had a premonition that I should inspect all my shackles springs etc. not sure why. It had only been a few weeks. Well when I crawled underneath I saw 2 shackles that were nearly warbled completely through and a broken spring. Last spring I replaced all my bushings, bolts, and shackles. I may have to go to a 6 month interval. Any ways just a reminder to check your stuff out.

Re: reminder to inspect your equipment/trailer

Tires too! I replace all 4 on my boat trailer 2 years ago and they only have 3000-4000 miles on them. I found 2 of them had belts seperated and one was not only out of round but had tread seperated and pealing off with steel belts shreaded. The other was out of round with the tread bulged and steel fibers sticking through the tread.

Goodyear warrantied/prorated them but it still cost me $110 to have them replaced. He said sometimes they see that and it's not abnormal. Discount said they see it all the time. They said what I think most of us know, "Marathons can seperate but Carlisles just blow".

Also check those balls! (here we go again! ) I just noticed a friend's was loose and about to fall off. He had no idea.

Check for cracks in the welds on your hitch too!

Re: reminder to inspect your equipment/trailer

Good advice... I just dropped my trailer by a friends house to check the brakes and
repack the bearings. He noticed a nail in 1 of the tires. He also noticed that
my hitch head was tilted down too much - adjuster must have worked its way loose.

Sheesh, you'd think a guy would notice something like that... I dang sure wouldn't have pointed it out for the guy. People might start to wonder what the heck I was doing looking at 'em anyway....
