Saleman-Legally? The laws that pertain to personal use Rving are very lax and no-one is going to bother a 3/4 ton pulling a fifth wheel RV.
Me-Would you recommend a dually for these bigger fifths.
Salesman-That is totally a personal preference I personally think it is a waste of money I pull these trailers back and forth from shows all the time and our dealer only has 1 dually and no one wants to drive it. I use the dealers 99 250 extended cab and it will pull any trailer we sell with ease.
Me-Thank you for your time.
Just thought this would be a funny story topic.

super--agree with you--but--not so funny when old folks that have the money to buy them have a wreck because they are overloaded--salesman should have a DOT standing next to them when they run their mouth---

how many F450's do you actually see every day pulling RV's, even IF the RV saleman warns the customer that he needs one?? The RV manufacturers are quickly outpacing the trucks that all people are used to buying, it isn't always the RV salesguy.
They're just making much heavier trailers these days. Ricky and Lucy sure didn't have a washer/dryer and 4 slideouts in their Airstream.
So it aint just old people and salesmen, the West out here is full of very heavy toyhaulers pulled by kids, and also fulltimers pulling everything they own in their house-on-wheels.
Its just that the F450 has a "too big" stigma for the average pickup-truck buyer. Maybe Ford should get rid of the current F350 since it is so similar to the F250, and rebadge the F450 as the F350. Then the RV manufacturers could start putting 10,000 pounds of additional junk on RV's.

LMAO, if wasn't the trailer ... W/D ... or slides ... it was Lucy's "Rock Collection" that got loose that was the problem.

The prroblem is not pulling the trailer it is the STOPPING.
"The prroblem is not pulling the trailer it is the STOPPING."
The brakes on the trailer are the same no matter what the tow vehicle is. Brakes on a F250HD & F350 SWD are the same.
How does stopping enter into this ?

Now Now I wasn't trying to start trouble or arguments. I just think that all the knowledge here is impressive and the fact that a guy who's job it is to sell a product which is totally dependent on the consumer of the products ability to tow or move the product would have such a cavalier attitude toward the legality or safety of such an important aspect of the sale. Because as we all know the largest investment a lot of the time is not the RV but the tow veh.
It is also funny how the aspects of a topic on this particular forum take off. Some guys get very offended at alittle difference in opinion. I am a local police officer in PA and the laws on the very subject of RV's or Farm veh's are very open to interpretation as well as a lot of other topics. But the bottom line still relies on safety. But as far as a State Trooper (AKAOT) is concerned it is simple what ever the GVW states is legal. Then that’s what's LEGAL. But then again this is not always gospel truth either. Why we have a thing called traffic court. (Interpretation) I was told by many good old time cops "That the law is not black and white even though it may appear that way on paper. That in fact through the length of you career you will work 95% of the time in the gray area." And with that being said I think that is why this particular forum takes so many angles and the same people which usually agree up in the other forums tend to differ so much down here.
Just my 2 Cents but keep up the good debates and to anyone looking for GOOD info this is a great place to get it.
Good Luck

I had to make a quick up and back trip of 1400mi. on I-35 this last week, all the snowbirds were beginning their migration north, but what caught my attention was a lot of F150's with fifth-wheels behind them. I was by myself on this trip so I just watched the opposite direction traffic. The other thing was how many Hitchhiker II fifth-wheels are out there, about every fourth or fifth one was a HitchhikerII. F150's with fifths and they looked loaded, wonder who was filling the drawers of these people?

In my copy of the movie, it was a Royal brand trailer, not Airstream. It was same as the 1950 vintage Royal brand I kept until 1990 (as a parked fishing camp after its road years were over).
edit: sorry Larry, it was fatdog's original post I meant to click reply.

alright, .. Royal brand trailer it was. You have a good memory.
Good movie.
and Larry, I laughed when I remembered those rocks that you reminded us of. I guess maybe a few slides in a RV aren't so bad after all if you don't have a Lucy on board lugging big rocks all over.
Well, why WERE those family cars able to tow rigs like that?
My first car, a '56 Chevy, had a in-line 6 and a solid frame. Solid. Not quite sure how good the brakes were though. Broke kids don't do brake jobs.

The full frame cars were basically the same setup as our trucks, albeit not as strong. Probably safer with that straight 6 too - only took a half hour to get up to 50!
I wish I had taken more photos when I was overseas, but they think nothing of subcompacts towing decent trailers over there. This one is from Ireland

nice pic!
how come the door on the wrong side of the TT though??
jese, those guys drive on the wrong side of the road, and they put doors on the port side of trailers
Along with the tag on the trailer with the GVW. etc. for the unit. Maybe there should be a tag with min. truck specs to pull the unit. With one manufacturer doing 80% of the building of units, and that they have a very strong lobby, Don't think that will happen. As for braking, pulled a tri-axle toy hauler into Salt Lake, coming down off the mt. (I80) unit losted its brakes half-way down. Two weeks later pulled a top of the line tri-axle 5th wheel RV into Salt Lake same route as before. Never knew it was behide the truck, all kinds of braking power. Guess the differance was the toy hauler listed out dealer price $26,000, Fifth Wheel $86,000, Toy hauler built by the major builder of trailers in US, Fifth wheel built by independent company.
