Is it Safe to Carry/Tow This Much Weight

My truck has 8800 GVWR and 12,000 GCVWR. I'm considering purchasing a slide-in camper that weighs 2,800 lbs and I pull a trailer with Landcruiser on it that weighs approx 6,000 lbs. It looks like I'll be over on GVWR by about 1,500 lbs and over on GCVWR by 4,500 lbs. Have any of you had experience with this sort of towing and do you think my truck is capable of pulling it? Are there any specific mods that you would recommend to do to the truck to make it capable?

Thanks,

James

Re: Is it Safe to Carry/Tow This Much Weight

I am sure that you will be fine towing it, just go slow and make sure your brakes work good, both trailer and truck. Check your registration to make sure it allows this much weight, if you are worried about tickets, and read over your car insurance policy to see if there are any specific inclusions about overweight driving, if it is not covered, or what-not. I wouldn't call them specifically, though, just check the policy. A lot of people tow a hell of a lot more than what you are talking about on a day to day basis with 1/2 ton trucks. Just be aware that you are heavy and drive safely.

You should also be aware that this increases your liability if you are in an accident. In a situation where you would normally be 100% no fault, you may be hit with the blame simply because you were overweight. If you are sued, i do not think this would look too good, either. however, if you are insured, and if you are driving safely, chances are you will be okay. You could be sued whether overweight or not, but being overweight won't help your case. This is why I would register my truck for the weight I am hauling, then you can say "see? The state says I am perfectly legal!" if it ever comes up...

Re: Is it Safe to Carry/Tow This Much Weight

Are you sure about the 12000 lb GCWR? That seems VERY low for a 3/4 ton, even though the manual trans reduces the rating I would think you were around 15,500 or so. Do you have a PowerStroke or a turbo IDI diesel? That may be the difference.

Re: Is it Safe to Carry/Tow This Much Weight

Believer - It appears as though we have similar trucks except mine is 4X4. Have you checked your GCVWR? I was shocked to see that it was so low. I do have a powerstroke...probably one of the first as mine was manufactured in mid '94.

Now, having said that, my manual does not mention anything about the powerstroke engine. It has a section in the weight rating table for 7.5 which was the displacement of the earlier IDI. I have a supplemental powerstroke owner's manual which I don't think mentions anything about a revised GCVWR. I'll check that at lunch today and post any info I find.

Thanks,

James
