Superduty with a box truck on a trailer? Bad Idea? (Video)

YouTube - Truck Somehow Avoids Tipping On Highway

It seems like this guy has a box truck on some sort of trailer being towed conventionally by a Superduty. Bad idea anyone?

That was amazing!!!!

I have had some bad sways like that with a overloaded trailer, but nothing like that high profile rig.

That's why you secure a vehicle to a trailer by the frame, not by the axles.

When you secure it by the axles, you have two degrees of freedom (the trailer and vehicle springs, both)
When you secure it by the frame, you have one degree of freedom (the trailer springs only)

I've tried & failed to explain the concept many times, but a video's worth a thousand words. I'm bookmarking that one for eternity.

I agree that he failed to secure the load properly. Another thing to consider is his speed. Regardless of how well or poorly a item is secured, the towing speed will play into this. In a situation like this, I'd say that he was probably close to the wieght limit on the trailer and didn't have it placed properly due to the size of the load.
He was very lucky, I'm sure he needed a fresh pair of undies, cause i'd be willing to bet his butt grabbing the seat.

By the looks of the video it is secured very well. There is no movement in the load at all.

I am guessing that there was not enough weight up front. That is was caused my problems on a overlaoded trailer, but the weight was only 3' high.

I'd have created a vacuum between me and the seat if I'd of been driving...You would have had to use a crow bar to pry me out...

Forgotto mention that that trailer is now bent beyond use. When they take that load off that trailer is going to bounce something terrible.

I agree it looks like they strapped it down by the axles. Turns the whole trailer into a second order mechanical system. Looks like they hit a bump or changed lanes and found the natural frequency of the system.

I see the truck secured only at the front, with the truck rear axle/wheels being airborne. The trailer axle stays on the ground while whipping back and forth as you hear the truck slamming down on the deck. The tongue weight looks heavy, so I’d guess crosswinds and/or abrupt driver movement kicking it off.

Ok, I'll throw in my 2 cents. The truck on the trailer looks like a Unimog with a box. Pretty heavy truck empty. If the guy bought the truck and also a spare engine, a spare set of axles and put them in the box, you could never get enough hitch weight to prevent sway. I have had this EXACT same thing happen when I hauled a 5 bottom plow a long time ago. I could not get the plow far enough forward on the trailer to make any tongue weight. It seemed OK and I started off down the road. I went several miles before it started whipping, all I did was cross a bridge seam in the road. Things went to hell and I did almost crash the truck. I was able to save the rig by using the overide button on the brake controller and locking the trailer brakes up completely, this straightened the the truck out immediately. I nursed the load the last 3 miles at 15 MPH with my hazards on and 1 finger on the brake controller!
