superduty oem brake controller

I wanted to know if the oem brake controller available from ford was a good unit? I have a tandem axle 14k equipment trailer behind a 550.

Could this unit be hooked up in an older truck without any major hassles other than mounting?

Thanks
Hud

I've got the factory built in brake controller on my truck. I tow a bumper pull 14k Dump trailer, a bumper pull 14k Tiltbed equipment trailer and my Gooseneck horse trailer that loaded is 16k. The controller works great.

I have no idea about retro fitting it to older trucks.

Yes, it's a good unit, and it can't be connected to a truck older than 2005. The computer that supports it isn't ini an older truck, and trying to get one of those to work in an older truck would cost more than a new truck.

Mark, I have a 2005 F250 with the OEM brake controller and it works great, however, I have my dealer about the 4 aux switches on it, and he has no idea what they are used for. Is anyone have any knowledge on what these switches are for?

People use the aux switches for many different things. High idle, fog lights, back-up lights, etc.

They are used for any 12 volt accessory that you install. There are no set uses, they are added because these trucks have a history of owner installed accessories that need switches.

I think the Ford brake controller is great.
I had a Prodigy in my Ram 2500. It is now sitting in a box. I wouldn't buy another Ford without it.

That' sounds like more of a trailer problem

Trying hooking up top another trailer and see what happens.

I will try hooking up to a different trailer, the weird thing is the trailer brakes worked just fine with my old F150.

I think the 2005 controller requires the truck to be moving at ?? mph to activate the trailer brakes. Will not apply brakes when not moving.

Yes, there was a lot of issues with the first oem Ford controllers. The biggest complaint was that it wouldn't hold the brakes at a stop with the knobs. There was something about the amount of current that was being read to determine whether to electrically apply the trailer brakes or not. There's probably a month's worth of reading about the original issues if you search Ford OEM controllers.

I would stay FAR away from your dealer if they didn't even know what the upfitter switches were for. Thats their job to know these things. Just goes to show that dealers arn't what they used to be.

The factory brake controller reduces output as the truck slows to a stop. In the early '05 trucks, the manual control output was also reduced so that it put out almost no voltage at 0 mph. Some time in late '05, the changed the programming so the manual lever would put out full voltage at any speed.
