Surgeing trailer brakes

Hope this finds all haveing a safe and good new yrs. so far. Anyway I have a issue with surgeing(?) brakes on a 26' Big Tex G.N. I have a Draw Tite II brake controler that came with the truck and has always worked real nice, anyway Ihave noticed that when just about stoped it seems that the trailer brakes start to "surge?" ;like you are "pumping" the brakes any ideas? Thanks for any help

stay safe out there

Re: Surgeing trailer brakes

I think it is 2 things. 1 is over gain / 2 ABS brakes. That is just my opinion for now. Mine does it and Ive seen others do the same. \There was a discussion on it a long while back but it didnt last long......I dont remember if any one had a viable answer to it other than it being the ABS brake causing the surging brakes

Planned upgrades are a new and better turbo and larger exhaust pipes than the 21/2s that are already under the rig/ would like a 6 spd tranny but dont know if that is a feasable or smart investment yet.

First, I would get rid of that controller and get a Jordan. Jordan told me that he originally designed that controller for Draw Tite. It is a very old design and it will wear out as all controllers do.

Roy </div></div>doh! Read the sigs., just describing the feeling while piloting an automatic.

No constant I can find in the scenario, is it the truck abs, trailer brakes or some weird resonance that sets up with a few bumps approaching the final stop. Only happens during the last 40-50' when loaded heavy, and trying to duplicate it on the same course/same load shows no results.

Seems like a heavier controller output setting eliminates it, so maybe it is an abs reaction. However, no abs-like pulsating feel is felt on the pedal.

Very seldom occurrence so it's hard to define clearly but, It'll sure get your attention and make you wonder, "What the heck was that?"

Re: Surgeing trailer brakes

LOL no problem I have done it too , but yes it does feel like its to ABS, only thing is it has not done this before, I turned the "setting" down to 2.5 and it is not as bad but still there, also have not seen it do it when pulling the RV (28"G.N. also) I pulled a good load on it about a month ago and it was not doing it then, hooked up to move it in the yard and thats when I noticed it? oh well will see.........

Shawn </div></div>Cable mount has issues with GM. So, you think it's an Electric versus Proportional issue? It happens in the final few feet of a stop, can't imagine how a proportional would be any different.

I believe my Digital Draw-tite is a different model than Firedude's but, it may be controller related. They're Lifetime warranted, maybe I'll have it swapped out and see, it's only 5 years old or less and I have noticed a 0.5 variance in the set output occasionally.
