ticketed for illegal mirrors

Hi Gang,

I just received a repair ticket because my mirrors are substandard. I have an 01 f250 with the trailer towing mirrors. IE; the big boxy ones that slide out an additional four inches on each side for towing. The AZ state trooper measured my trailer and the mirrors. According to him the mirrors are three inches short on each side. I have to believe what he said. The trailer is 8.5 feet wide. The mirrors are good only for trailers up to 8 feet wide.

So, the question is where can I find extenders for the optional trailer towing mirrors?

So far all I have been able to find is extenders for the standard mirrors.

T I A for any input.

Dale

These will

crack you up, but may get you past the law:

Tow-N-See Towing Mirrors

I would look in your States Vehicle Code, that trooper may not be correct.

So0me review mirror laws, state something like, you must be able to see 200 feet etc behind the trailer on each side.

Check it out.

I would also check into Arizona's laws a little before I started buying things and if that is so then there are going to be a lot of mirror extensions sold. I found out a few years ago that at times they look for any little problem that they can find. I was pulled over with a 16' trailer loaded with 4 wheelers, the trooper told me it was because I had no license light or tail lights. He was right but he didn't even let me get out of the truck to check but wrote the "fix it ticket" and told me to get off the freeway until the next morning and take it to a licensed shop to have it repaired. The next exit I pulled off and checked the plug. After 400 or so miles it had vibrated out enough that it didn't make a connection, I filled out the ticket and said that I repaired it myself and what it was along with a couple of comments on the trooper.

Dale,

Recheck that trooper's measurements and compare them with Airstream's figures. We own a fully restored 1971 31' Sovereign, and I can guarantee you that our trailer is no wider than 8'. I've seen some of the newer Airstreams that looked wider than ours, but I think it's an optical illusion.

I'm bettin' the trooper just wanted to take a closer look at your tin can.

There is many things wrong with this.

1. Most trailers are only 8' wide. If you measured 8'6" I will be very surprised.

2. To my knowledge there is nothing that says the need for specific mirrors unless you are commercial moving houses. They have the mirrors on a rack they extend.

3. In all my miles hauling overwide boats I have never been inspected for mirror size or width. Our y2k dually has the same mirros as you and we haul boats up 14' wide with nothing additional.

I call a serious BS job on the cop. Did he fine you? If so get the statute in writing where it applies to the recreational rig. I am thinking he found out his wife was cheating on him and needed to ruin someone elses day.

If it was in Pinal county, there is a cop around there in the area of the rest area right by Casa Grande that does not know his head from a hole in the ground. He thinks that he has it all figured out about vehicle laws, and trucks and commercial vehicles, and has cost me about $5000 fighting his stupid fixit tickets and out of service tags. I had to send a guy there from Mesa that had a Class A CDL to pull an f-250 with a gooseneck trailer because this nitwit decided it needed a class A CDL. Fight it, take it to cout and move on. There is no helping this idiot.

Maybe he should be looking for the S10's and Rangers pulling trailers with the stock, car type mirrors. How do they see around them?

Airstream does make an 8.5' wide body. Our company president had one. Every state is different on the mirror regs, that's why too much is your best bet. If you don't mind strap on mirrors, our McKesh Mirrors have a good reputaion. You can see 'em at McKesh Mirrors.

CIPA makes a decent slip on, but they'll vibrate some.

Thanks to all who replied. Airstream started making 8.5 footers late last century. The trooper told me 8.5 is a maximum for interstates, and 8 feet is the law on non-IS highways. He stated further that AZ made an exception for RVs and 8.5 footers are allowed.

Thanks for the links to mirror sites. I do not think any of those would be satisfactory with Ford's big boxy mirror and would like to find a local distributor so I could test drive first. I will try Camping World as they have some extensions.

Thanks also for the tip on checking the statute. I believe I can do that on line and will try as soon as I can.

Dale

Crazy Ivan

Remember "The Hunt for the Red October",??

A Crazy Ivan is when they make a sudden turn in either direction so that they can get a view of who may be behind them.

I have to admit, I've had to do them before I bought my truck (I had an Expedition).

Dave
