AZ dot cops are notorious for measuring "total" trailer width. This includes awnings, lights, etc., anything attached to the side of the trailer. This is how nit picken they can be. Two of my buddies were in a AZ "chicken house', and they had to remove an outside light to be under 102" wide. This was on a new unit being transported to a dealer from the factory. The CDL license thing is on the books for units being transported commercially in AZ, and a few other states, regardless of weight. The law is not enforced too often if the combined rated GVWR of the truck, and trailer are under 26,001 pounds. One thing to remember, The cops have the gun, badge, and ticket book, and a few like to pick on out of state people. It is all about revenue, and quotas. Enforcement, and revenue, under the disguise of safety, is not always in your favor. AZ DOT are some of the most unfair in the U.S.

I was ticketed just south of Payson on highway 87. Since this is a repair ticket, I will not fight it. I will tell them I have fixed it and continue as in the past.

BTW, I have towed this trailer 40k miles in many states and Canada. Never been stopped before.

The officer said AZ made an exception for RVs. I have no knowledge if other states have an 8 wide law or not. Seems as if all would have to accept freeway standards if they want to continue collecting federal highway dollars for maintenance of interstate and non-interstate federal highways

When we travel we plan our route to spend as little time as possible on interstates.

Amen to that. I've spent quite a trips taking the back roads with our tin can, between Bisbee and Phoenix, but with fuel prices being what they are, our silver palace is sitting in its garage, slumbering. I'll never sell it, but I'm wondering if I'll ever be able to take it on the road again.

Well, next time you're in Bisbee, drive south for 10 minutes and fill up in Naco for $2.20 a gallon.

If that is true, there sure are a lot of illegal semis running out there. Most (Not many) are 102" wide now, and my math tells me that is 8'6".

LOL. I had a MS trooper behind me the other day... and I couldn't tell if he was still back there, I kept thinking about crazy ivans.

Then he pulled me over and brought the drug dog to search my empty trailer.

I have an H&H trailer. It looks like half their line-up is 101" or 102" wide. Mine is a 20ft, 10K tilt bed which is 102".

8'6" or 102" is the national standard.

If you are over 102" you are overwide and need aditional permits.

The statute clearly states a "motor vehicle." We can rule out the constructed part of the statue since the trailer is obviously not part of the tow vehicle and is definitely not a motor vehicle. The other part is the part of the stature that needs interpretation. Is the tow vehicle determined to be "loaded" by the trailer it is towing or does loaded mean putting something or somethings in the bed of the truck that is large enough to block the driver's view. I don't think this statute applies to a tow vehicle that is pulling a large trailer, but then that is only an opinion.

You guys are missing the point!

My moto after 28 years of uniform, plain clothes and airborne work is....

" I'd rather have a sister work in a cat house than have a brother on highway patrol!"

Just kidding, but do not paint all law enforcement due to a few "sooper troopers"

Check you local reg's and NEVER hesitate to politely challenge a decision made if you have the facts. If you carry a few pages of regs pertaining to your situation, you may have the last laugh on your next stop.
