torklift tiedown

I`m thinking of getting this setup for my truck and slide in camper. the decision is which one,,,I have running boards along the bed, and they sell a tie down for trucks with running boards and tie downs for trucks without running boards. I can go either way. I`m just wondering if the tie down for the running boards extend lower and be vunerable to obstacles. any experiences would be appreciated.

Re: torklift tiedown

I have the factory running boards and the torklifts.

Unless your running boards extend beyond the cab, you'll be ok.

I think the WAAG bars extend to the rear wheel well.

All factory type steps/bars should clear the TL's just fine.

Re: torklift tiedown

I have an '86 f350 crew cab with tork lift tiedowns. The truck originally had full-length steps from front wheelwell to the rear wheelwell. The tork-lift installation required getting shorter steps that ended just at the rear of the rear door.

I think the tork lift system is better than others I've seen. I now think that the weakest part of the system is the camper tie-down points, which are secured by an eyebolt. The eyebolt goes thru a 3/8 inch hole in a 3/4 inch wide 1x2. These pissant pieces of wood tend to buckle when you try to cinch the tork-lifts down to spec.

Re: torklift tiedown

I would have to agree with Monte. I had to remove the portion of the running board behind the rear door on my '92 crewcab in order to fit the torklift units. The Torklift system is well worth the loss of that little bit of running board.

I have had to rebuild the bottom rail on both sides of the camper for just the reason Monte mentioned. They are not designed to take the strain of a tiedown system. As Monte stated, the 3/8" eyebolt is mounted in a 3/4" runner. Half the wood must be drilled away for the eyebolt. Its just not a good design.
