Rumor has it DOT in Cali wants registration if even 1 axle touches the ground. I cannot confirm this though.........

Re: Tow out car out of Californinia on bill of sale??

In Ohio you have to have current registration if one axle is on the ground. The car caddy does not need registration while under a car, it becomes the "steering axle" for the car itself in a legal sense. I cannot speak to California but I cannot imagine anything there being less restrictive than here in the midwest.

Here in Ohio a temporary tag will suffice - that may be the easiest way for you.

If you use a trailer there should be no problems.

Re: Tow out car out of Californinia on bill of sale??

If you are buying a car out there, then buy it, have a BILL OF SALE, and the signed title in your hands,, I would be willing to bet any amount of money that it wont be an issue if your taking the car home to register it in YOUR state of residence. (You have to abide by YOUR States laws, no matter where you are...)
Kind of like comparing license plates, Indiana only requires one, Cali may require two one front and one rear, it would be like California saying you have to have TWO Plates displayed on your car to enter the state,,, May not be an accurate comparison, but.

Re: Tow out car out of Californinia on bill of sale??

california it has to have current registration if it is touching the road. It does not have to be registered to you, it just has to have tags. CHP, also likes to pull people over who have two different state tags for vehicle and trailer....

That brings about an interesting dilemma. Any vehicle I've ever sold the tags stayed with me. I find it hard to believe that a signed title and bill of sale wouldn't be sufficient. Of course this is California we're talking about....

in california the tags stay with the car, you do not need to "turn them in" like you do in NC and possibly VA.

....and actually now, we don't have to turn them in here in NC anymore.

[/ QUOTE ] So if you sell your car, and someone goes right out and commits a crime, "Rob a bank, ect..." and they get the tag then your name shows up as the owner? (Until the title and registration is transfered?) Sorry, dont think I like that, the tag in your name connects you to that vehicle,,,, (If they dont transfer it promptly,,)

Re: Tow out car out of Californinia on bill of sale??

No, when you sell a vehicle in california you and the new owner fill out forms on the title. the new owner keeps the title, you tear off and keep a little stub to mail in. as long as you mail in the little peice of paper you do not own the car any more as of the date on the paper. It is a real problem in California that illegal immigrants will purchase a car, never register it. and the folk who sold the car never sent in the paper work, then months go by and they have parking tickets etc... have to prove they sold the car....
