Towing a big trailer

Wnated to share a picture of our new Fifth wheel travel trailer being pulled by my F-250. I had to use the truck to move the trailer from one campsite to another, about 500 yards distance. The truck handled the weight easily and even with the large turning radius, I was able to back the trailer into a pretty tight site. The trailer is about 44 foot long and weighs 22-24,000lbs. I am in the process of shopping for a bigger truck, but am not looking forward to letting this great truck go.

Nice looking setup, but I sure wouldn't want to do that with an F250 on a daily basis. That weight is even beyond what my F350 Dually with the Tow Boss is rated (Max 19,400Lbs for a Fifth Wheel). If you are going to be towing that trailer, you really should go the Medium Duty (F650 or greater). I don't think 450's or 550's are rated that high, or if they are, hope you always travel on flat ground as you want to add anywhere from 10% (East Coast) to 15% (West Coast) of the load for mountain towing. That trailer is definately more than the Superduty specs allow.

Re: Towing a big trailer

With that much trailer, I'd be leaning towards a F-450 or F-550. More towards a F-550! There's some nice ones out there now, with boxes to match! With the 550 you'll get heavier brakes, springs, rear end, front end, axles and probably tranny.

My next one will be a 450 or 550!

Re: Towing a big trailer

You need a converted class 8 truck like my single axle volvo.
They can be registered as motorhomes so they are CDl exempt. The only way to tow heavy safely. Turn better then a CC long bed ford, go for over a million miles and can be had for under 30K to mention a few positives.

New F-450 with HD towing pkg is rated for 30,000 pounds GCWR. If the 5er grosses 24k on the road, then that leaves only 6k for the wet and loaded truck.

New F-550 with HD towing pkg is rated for 33,000 pounds GCWR. If the 5er grosses 24k on the road, then that leaves only 9k for the wet and loaded truck. And a wet and loaded F-550 with steel bed/body will probably weigh closer to 10,000 pounds.

So I'll have to agree that a class 6 medium-duty truck would be ideal for that much 5er. F-650 Ford. Freightliner FL-60 with Mercedes engine, or the new International RXT ( http://www.internationaldelivers.com...ily/rxttow.asp ). And Peterbilt now makes a class 6 truck similar to the RXT that some of the rich guys are using to tote their monster 5ers or LQs.

A class 8 tractor would be overkill, but perhaps a used one converted to single rear axle would be suitable, and cost less than a new class 6.

Re: Towing a big trailer

At bare minimum you need dual rear wheels under the nose of that trailer.

Re: Towing a big trailer

I would go with the 550 with that baby. I was 16k with a new 01 350 and blew the turbo and slightly tweeked the bed. You could tell by the struts at the fenders pricking the fender steel.

The 450 tranny would heat. It was a dually run a long and I hated it for 2 years till I sold it.

I think I would actually get a 650 if I had a rig that big. Nothing like sweating bullets on a happy go lucky vacation. Stress on a supposedly stressless trip. Think real hard on the tow vehicle cause once you got it and you get problems towing heavy, getting ford to recreate the problem on a dealership test drive is not going to happen guaranteed. I've been there toooo many times with too many different ford trucks. I'm hoping this new Ranch King makes me happy like my 96

Good Luck

Ford Service has a problem when it comes to diagnosing Tow problems, because they have no testing procedures to diagnose tow problems. Caveat Emptor.
