Re: Towing in the High Performance Superchips program
I have the older Superchips (60 & 80 hp) tuner in my truck. If you dont have gauges DO NOT TOW WITH THE SUPERCHIPS IN "OFF ROAD" MODE. I towed with mine in the 80 hp mode before I got gauges and I ended up replacing my turbo shortly thereafter. After I bought my gauges I found out why. In the performance mode you can hit 1300 degrees real fast pulling an empty trailer (24 foot gooseneck stock trailer) Loaded...it just gets worse.
I know that there are different computer codes that the Superchips tuners work better with...maybe I just have the wrong code. If not, you can learn from my $1000 mistake.
If you have gauges, you might get by with it if you watch your egts and get ready to back out of the throttle when needed. Generally if I am pulling something heavy, I just go back to stock to be safe.
Good luck,
Jay

Re: Towing in the High Performance Superchips program
I would not reccomend towing that heavy in any tune other than tow-safe. If you have an auto, the tranny can barely handle that tune unloaded, much less with 7200 pounds behind it. Also, why do you need that much power when you are towing and your truck has just became a 15,000 lb. missle?

Re: Towing in the High Performance Superchips program
I have gauges on order. I would never tow in that mode, but I have heard other people do it. I have only towed the boat once and I used the tow safe mode.
Re: Towing in the High Performance Superchips program
When I had the Superchips I once forgot to change the program from hot to tow,, EGT's climbed very quickly and was a PIA to drive. I pulled over and re-programmed,, much better. I have since gone to a 4 position chip from DP tuner. It made a HUGE!!!!! difference in towing low egts and great power.
Re: Towing in the High Performance Superchips program
I use the 90hp program and I have had no EGT issues. I probably could go to the 110hp program but I don't like the way the transmission shifts using that program. It feels like the engine is going to tear the transmission apart using the 110. I rarely exceed 1100 degrees towing with the 90hp program.

Blueridgerunner, do you have that post turbo or pre turbo. Those temps sound a little low. I can hit 1200 stock pulling a decent load.

I've never hit 1200* pulling anything stock. With the superchips 1705, I've never hit 1200* in Tow Safe or in Tow-Perf (but I watch it close pulling the big hills). I've never towed using the Performace tune. My pyro is in the drivers manifold. Some trucks just seem to run hotter or cooler than others.

Re: Towing in the High Performance Superchips program
Early 99 6 speed. In the 90Hp Tow Performance mode I don't have any EGT problems. Only got to 1250* one time on a long steep grade pulling our 34' Keystone Cougar fifth wheel at a weight of about 12,500#. I have a Tymar Intake and straight exhaust. Pyrometer is in the drivers side up pipe.

Re: Towing in the High Performance Superchips program
i tow FREAKIN MASSIVE all the time with my 1700 in the hot setting. it was not doable till i did afe stage 2 and 4" turbo back. but now even towing 30k it is very maneagable. now i could go WAY over 1200 if i wanted but dont need to. then running with that weight at about 65 it stays steady at 1100. keep in mind flat lands down here. afe stage 2 brought it down 50-100 degrees or so and 4" brought it down prolly around 250 degrees. it used to get up there quick. now very maneabeable. i usually tow about 20k a few times a week. no probs so far. drive by the gauges.
Re: Towing in the High Performance Superchips program
The scmt is pretty good at doing what it advertises. IIRC, 7,000 lbs is the cutoff point between the tow settings. Gauges are good insurance but not totaly necessary if you stay with in scmt parameters.
I run in "Tow Perf" all the time, however, I have gauges. You can get to 1,200 empty in any of the settings.
