Sorry but you can't use speed and mpg in the same sentance. You'll have to give up one or the other as you can't have both.
On two recent Az to Co trips from 1800ft to 11000ft to 1800ft, 1900 miles each, pulling 16k GCW I got 14.1mpg average! Another 7state 3600 mile pull with 31kGCW I got 13.86mpg average.
I pull by peak torque RPM, 1750rpm on the grades and 1600rpm on the flats.
Going that slow would take forever to get anywhere, but will get great milage.
I pull around 65mph and get 11MPG pulling my 10k-lb TT.

I just pulled a 24ft bumper pull toyhauler that was about 9000 loaded with the rig in my sig. I got 10 mpg round trip pulling over some step passes (4 to be exact one way) going to the coast in northern calif. it was 200 miles one way to the camp spot. I filled on way out of town and then again once i arrived got 10 mpg. did the same thing on the way home and got another 10 mpg. first pull was in the after noon when temps were just below 100 and on the way back early in the am with temps in the 50's.

I just got back from running from gustof and got 13 pulling my 10800 fifth wheeler with swivelwheel trailer with a 850# bike and the trailer loaded with a lot of weight like gun's and beer and all my meat from my freezer,3 ice chest full. Boy am I tired of this ****! I have a 01 supercab auto with 3.73 gears,S&B filter, ball buster turbo, edge on 60 and walker btm. Talk about turbo whistle,it sound's like a 18 wheeler.
This thread is good.... I tow a 8500lb Wildcat 5er with all stock 4X4 2007 Lariat 6.0 ltr and I'm getting 10 consistently which leads me to the question of why should I upgrade to turbo-back exhaust, power-puck, AirRaid,,,,??
I towed the same as the above post minus the gun's meat and beer 4K to Colorado and back without the up graded turbo and just a K&N in the stock box and got 11.5 average last september. My freind has a 05-6.0 crew cab F-250 and made the trip pulling the same and both truck's got the same mileage.
12-13 mpg after correcting for tire size pulling about a 6k 24ft 5th wheel. Sweet spot seems to be about 2000 rpm with my setup which puts me about 72 mph.
I tow from Colorado Springs to Spearfish, SD with 10K a few times a year. While mine is a 6.0, I have found it beneficial to keep the RPMs under 2K. Usually, this is about 65 MPH max. There is a lot of rolling country and altitudes go from 7000' and back again in the Black Hills, as you know. I can usually get 11-12 MPG on this route, as opposed to my usual 13.5 average, and that is here in CO, including mountain travel. It's a tough route no matter what.
