Towing Package-Anything Else Needed?

Wife and I bought a nice 2002 CC PSD with towing package. We have the harness that was furnished with the truck.

We tow a travel trailer with frig and use DC sometimes towing to keep our meat and other items cold in the frig.

Anything extra we need to have done or do to this truck before we connect up our brake controller? Relays, fuses, ect? Thanks for the help. This is the first vehicle we have had that came with a seven pin receptacle and tow package, so we are hoping we don't have to do anything or very little.

Thanks for all your help!

Mike

Re: Towing Package-Anything Else Needed?

The towing pkg was std on the 2002 PSD. The receiver was not std. But if you have the receiver and the 7-pin plug on the back of the truck, then there's not much more you need to add.

Weight-distributing hitch if the trailer grosses more than 5,000 pounds when wet and loaded.

Trailer brake controller.

Aftermarket tranny temp gauge. Don't rely on the one in your dash - it's an "idiot gauge". Put the sender in the pressure port on the side of the tranny, then anything less than 200 is normal. 200 to about 210 is the hot but okay zone. If you ever see over 210, then change to synthetic ATF and plan on adding more tranny cooling capacity. 210 to 225 is the very hot so watch it zone. 225 is the red line. Don't let it go over 225. Stop and let it cool off with elevated idle RPM.

Thanks, Smokey.

Yup, came with the receiver hitch also. Just did not know if relays or other circuits were needed in addition to the towing package wiring.

Hope it is cooler in West Texas than in Central Texas! Again, Smokey, thanks so much!

Back in the dark ages when mine was built, the towing pkg was optional. The optional towing pkg came with some wiring and relays in the glove box to be installed. I had my hitch installer also install the 7-pin trailer connector and the brake controller, so he worried about wiring it all up and installing the relays in the fuse box.

But yours is newer, and the towing pkg was std, with the relays and trailer plug already installed at the assembly plant.
