Towing regs "Smokey"

I have a conex box for a shed 20X8 and I will be moving it to Louisiana this summer from South Georgia. Can someone tell me if I have to stop at all weigh stations and do the doors have to be functioning properly? Can they be chained shut with a pad lock. I plan on using a 25 ft flatbed goose neck to haul it .

Re: Towing regs "Smokey"

I wouldn't think hauling a box would be any different than hauling a tractor or anything else as long as your not over 102" wide. If you don't have to stop with your empty trailer, you shouldn't have to stop with your loaded trailer. Regs are the same loaded or unloaded.

I'm assuming you aren't going to have to box loaded with migrant farm workers, drugs or other contraban.

Re: Towing regs "Smokey"

As long as your tow vehicle does not have Company signs you will be safe, According to US DOT regs any vehicle that can gross over 10,001 lbs to further company business or hauling for hire is subject to DOT regs.(US DOT covers interstate transportation not intrastate transportation, tho most states have adopted the US DOT regs with some exceptions- E.G. in Tx you arent regulated until you gross over 26,001 lbs, unless you travel interstate or its HAZMAT.) So if its just your personal stuff on a personal move, no probs. You can double check with each state you will be driving through, if was me I wouldn't worry about it. One thing though DOT wants the containers chained down at each end, and 2 straps going across the top last I read. Agriculture has their own set of exemptions, I believe its if you gross over 56,000lbs--- not sure onthat but the weight limit is up there.
interstate- meaning you cross state lines
intrastate-- meaning you travel your home state only
Oh yea, the doors can be padlocked, but IF for some reason a task force unit pulls you over and wants to see inside be prepared to open it. Not very likely but ya never know these days.

If it isn't over 13'6" high when loaded and other dementions are what you listed. You are good to go.Load it & drive safe.

Well I hauled a enclosed (box) from a strait truck on my flatbed. It was a 8' x 20' enclosed box on a 32' GN flatbed. I then put a car off the back. (barely fit) It was only a 450 mile trip across two state lines. IIRC height was 11'6" . I actually was considering using it to move wife to FL from ND but got a deal on rental truck and the problems of manuvering 32' GN in apt complex made it wiser to rent.

Re: Towing regs "Smokey"

As mentioned the only worry you will have is your total height. Make SURE your'd under 13'6. Besides the DOT, it wouldn't be nice that you clip the first overpass you come to and knock the box off, much less a power line or street light and clip either of those.

What part of south LA you coming to?
