Towing Report - Heavy RV

Picked up the fifth wheel this week. It's at the top of my truck's capacity (32' trailer rated at 12,500 pounds GVWR and 2,200 pound pin weight).

The truck performed surprizingly well! The truck squated down a few inches with the new load, but not bad. That turbo cranked up and it pulled it like a champ.

A very large/long hill maxed the speed out at 65, with no more pedal to spare. But, starting, stopping, and entrance ramp speeds were very respectable.

I was worried I had ordered too much RV, but am happy with the truck's performance.

If you want to get rid of that squat, get a set of these . I have a set on my truck and they are great. Very easy to install.

Re: Towing Report - Heavy RV

Get yourself a set of Firestone Ride Rite airbags. Easy install and no more squatting. Makes a huge difference in ride quality. Got mine here. If you get them, be sure to get the no drill model - they bolt right in.

I put a set of Timbren's on mine. On my trip to Yellowstone last summer, they worked great pulling my 35' fiver.

Re: Towing Report - Heavy RV

Overfly,
When you installed your air bags, did you end up with any leaks in the air lines. Several people I talked to have had minor leaks in their system that they can't get rid of.

Hmmnnn.... Several others? I've had this pair of Air Lifts on two trucks w/o a leak. I wouldn't use any other method of load control.

Re: Towing Report - Heavy RV

Those lines that come in the kit will give out. I suggest you find a big rig or truck specialty shop for the d.o.t. approved lines, they are of much better construction.

They've been in for almost a year and I've never had any issues with air leaks.

Re: Towing Report - Heavy RV

I'm in the process with Firestone right now of getting some answers. I bought the kit for a 4x4 F350. I specified SRW but think I got the wrong kit because I had a problem with the brackets, so make sure you get the right kit.

Glad to hear your satisfaction. I towed 10K recently from FL to NY and then to CO, and couldn't have been hapier.

I also have a set of NIB Ride Rite for sale in the classifieds. I had bought them for a 5th that we never get.

Re: Towing Report - Heavy RV

Get the Timbrens. They are maintenance free and do just as good as air bags. plus they won't blow up or wear out. I have had both and will not buy air bags ever again. If I ever need to beef up my suspension again it will definitely be Timbrens

Re: Towing Report - Heavy RV

I like my air bags. I have them with seperate fittings so they are adjustable individually. I work this old truck hard some days and have not had a reason to complain about the air bags.

Re: Towing Report - Heavy RV

I put a set of Helwig Helper springs on my 2000 F-250 PSD because the back end squatted under my 5'ver's 2,000 poung tongue weight, even though I was still just under the max GAWR for the rear. The problem with springs is you can't take them off and on for towing. If I still had a SRW truck, I believe I would opt for air bags, which you can de-pressurize when not towing to get a better ride.

But the springs did the job while towing.
