Trailer Running Lights won't work

I have a 2000 Super Duty with factory trailer tow package. Trailer running lights won't work. With trucks lights on, I have full voltage at pigtail, but as soon as I plug trailer lights in voltage drops to zero. Same thing happens when I try 3 different trailers and all 4 trailers light properly with other vehicles towing them. Has anyone had this problem, or know what to look at next?

Re: Trailer Running Lights won't work

Check to see if the pigtail wires match up with the wires on the trailer

Re: Trailer Running Lights won't work

They do. I have checked them multiple times. The running lights worked on all trailers previous to the problem beginning.

Re: Trailer Running Lights won't work

Check your ground on the trailer. We had a problem like that some time ago but the lights would work one minute then they wouldnt, then sometimes the marker lights would work with the brake lights. The other vehicles may be grounding the trailer through the truck. But the most common problem with lights on a trailer not working is in the ground wire coming from the trailer plug.

Re: Trailer Running Lights won't work

I have the same problem happening on every trailer. I have a good ground (not using just the ball). Turn signals, aux power, etc always work correctly. Just not the running lights.

Re: Trailer Running Lights won't work

It sound to me like you have a grounding problem. On ours everything worked like it should but the marker lights. Make sure the ground wire is in the plug good and that the screw is tight and follow that wire back and make sure its in good condition and not broke. But to know for sure is to run another wire and ground it to the neck of the trailer.

Re: Trailer Running Lights won't work

At this point it can't hurt to try that. I will let you know.

Re: Trailer Running Lights won't work

Use your jumper cables for the test ground wire.

Re: Trailer Running Lights won't work

That is still not it. I used a piece of new 10 gauge wire directly from the battery negative terminal to the trailer's ground input. Still no lights. Also double checked impeadance from truck pigtail ground back to negative terminal, resistance is near zero.

Re: Trailer Running Lights won't work

This may be a little off the wall but check for corrosion on the fuses or where the wire attaches to the plug (on the truck end) for looseness or corrosion?

Re: Trailer Running Lights won't work

Can you disconnect the marker lights from the trailer plug or where they are spliced to the cable and check if you have voltage without the lights in the circuit?

Re: Trailer Running Lights won't work

Batkerson: I have checked for corrosion or burning on the wires all the way back to the battery junction. Everything is clean. I have disconnected and reconnected all of the connectors in the circuit.

OldmanII: Yes, without the lights connected I have voltage. As soon as the lights are back in, there is no voltage. Same thing happens with the other trailers as well.

Re: Trailer Running Lights won't work

Do the lights on the truck still work with the trailer plugged in? Do the running lights blink when you turn on the turn signals or step on the brakes? Still sounds like a loose/corroded connection to me (had that happen on a house breaker panel when the contact between the breaker and the panel had corrosion between them. Would carry voltage but no current).

Re: Trailer Running Lights won't work

Truck lights work perfect when trailer is plugged in. Running lights do nothing when turn signals or brake lights are turned on.

Re: Trailer Running Lights won't work

Have you taken out the bulbs and checked the voltage at the lights inside the socket?
