Trailer wiring?

I have a 2001 F250,CC,7.3 with tow package...I ordered a prodigy controler and the quick connect harness/adapter that should be arriving in a couple of days. I found the female plug under the dash and it looks like a very easy installation. My question is: After looking at the "Ford electrical trailer tow installation insturction manual"(that came with the truck) ....it talks about "trialer tow fuse and relay installation"....Do I have to do this installation as well, for my elctric brakes to function correctly for my dump trailer???...Help!!!!!

Re: Trailer wiring?

I don't know what year it changed, but if you got the tow package it should have the harness, fuse and relay in the plastic bag in the glovebox, along with instructions. Mine is a 2002 and all I had was the little bit of harness. Which I didn't need anyway, because if you get the Ford adapter for your Prodigy it already has the Ford connector as well as the Prodigy side.

I have an '01 and I had to install the other parts for the tow package. On a side note, I had to have the dealer "find" the connector for me. It was up behind the radio, left there when the truck was built. There is another connector behind the panel, but it is for something else.

Re: Trailer wiring?

Yes - you need to look under the hood by the brake reservoir - or under the dash on later models. You have another set of fuses as well as two small boxes for relays. The relay boxes have the trailer charger and brake relays that need to be added as well as the corresponding puses in the power distribution box. Check your manual - I thnk you need like 2 fuses and maybe four relays? It'll be clear when you check the manual.

Re: Trailer wiring?

I have all the parts (two relays, two 30amp fuses and the wiring pig tial), but I'm confused about the "need" for this installation. In the manual, under "Electric trialer brake controller installation insturctions": It states that a "factory installed 6-way connector" is under the dash (which I found) and that it "contains all circuits required for the istallation of most brake controllers". This tells me, that this is the only installation I have to do, to place my electric trialer brakes in service???....... Under the "Trailer tow fuse and relay installation intructions" in another section of the manual it states "Your vehicle has been factory equipped with a 7-wire trailer tow prep system" and goes on about the installation of the fuses and relays under the hood. Question is: It the fuse/relay installation only needed if you want to "charge" your batter in the trailer???..is it mandatory to do both installations for everthing to work???.

I have a 2001 3/4 GMC Yukon XL with "tow package". It also came with pigtails, fuses and relays. I bought the prodigy (with custom electrical pigtial) for this vehicle and I did not have to install any of the above for my electric tailer brake to work on the dump trailer. Any help on clearing this up would be great.

Thanks!

Re: Trailer wiring?

The truck is wired for it - but the components are not all installed - they come is a package for the dealer to install.

Re: Trailer wiring?

Everything on my '03 worked except for the 12 volt pin for trailer charging. There was no relay installed from the factory (located in the box under the hood). If I recall, a relay was about $12 at the dealer - put it in and everything worked as it should.
