Turbo Charger?

Hey guys,

We have a '92 diesel f-250 4x4 and more often than not we haul a 6k tractor on a 2.5k flat totaling to 8.5k. It pulls the load fine until we get to the grades where it starts to groan and slow down. My question is, is there an after market turbo charger or something like it that would make the truck pull better on the grades. I am interested in a sub $1000 system if there is such a thing for under 1k.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Sure there is. We discuss them all the time on the 7.3/6.9 sections here. There's Banks, ATS, and Hypermax. I put a ATS system on my '91 in about '92+ when I had 30,000 miles. Now I have 239,000 with no complaints. Ford used the ATS system in about '94 until the Powerstrokes came out, however it was derated a bit with a smaller exhaust than the standard off the shelf ATS kit. Mine cost a little over $2000 complete. You're not going to get one for a grand. The kit includes A LOT of necessary components so I'd be a little scared to buy a so-called complete used kit.

Power-wise for pulling a load, with a turbo, you wouldn't think it was the same truck---big time increase in power and torque. And when pulling grades at high altitudes where the air's thin, a turbo just keeps stuffing it in so you have about the same power at 9000ft versus non-turboed which the higher you climb the more it smokes and less it pulls.

Thanks for the response, would it be possible to post a link to one of the ATS systems that you would recommend I get for my '92? I have 88k on it if it matters.
I'm new to all this so I don't know to much about turbo chargers yet.

Hey,
There is only one off the shelf ATS system that fits our rigs. Its listed on this page.

Restoring the layer structure...

When I get mine I plan on getting the Hypermax since they seem to have better reputation with customer service and the system is less intrusive in the engine compartment.

Hypermax - Catalog

Hopefully that was helpful. Most guys dont claim they get better mileage but say its night and day different with a turbo.

Would I be venturing to far to say that it becomes kinda like the PSD after one of those kits are installed?

2K seems like a big price tag! How much on average does it cost to get one of these installed? Or do you do it yourself? Does it really make that big of a difference???

Thanks so much!

Steve

Banks Power | ’83-93 Ford 6.9 & 7.3L >> Sidewinder® Turbo System

Does anyone know what the cost of this system is?

It looks like the hypermax is $300 less expensive than the ATS... is there a quality difference?

Thanks!

Steve

The cost for the full Banks system is close to $2700 or so. Yeah, they are expensive.

Right, ATS only makes the improved waste-gated version. I think the same applies to Banks (Sidewinder). I think I paid $2300 for my ATS complete with 3" exhaust.

The older PSDs but not the latest. Steve, if you go over to either the 7.3IDI section or 6.9IDI (I forget which one) there's a couple long recent threads on the various kits with mucho info. You shouldn't have to go back many pages, it was just a few days ago.
I've got a gazillion miles of trailer pulling and installing the ATS kit was (to me) the only way to go, best thing I ever did. For maximum benefit it's nice to have the 5 speed manual trans. You can really stay in the power range if you have one. If your truck is clean and in good shape and you're not in the mood to spend $40000 for a new one, a turbo kit is a good investment IMO. I was a heavy truck mechanic at the time, (retired now) so I installed mine myself. It's over a day's labor regardless what the installation instructions say so that might give you an idea of labor cost.

The thing is, our truck is in great condition! It's extremely clean, only 88k on it. The interior is in pristine condition. I'll look around for the other threads and see what I could find. Thanks!

You're welcome. I'm like you, I keep mine in A-1 shape. I'm not into breakdowns on the road, and I only have one tiny dent under the super cab window where a sorry cow evidently banged her head when I was at a cattle branding 3 years ago.

Do one of you guys have a copy of the installation instructions that you could e-mail me. Or, do you you know where I can get them online? I'm considering putting one on myself and would like to see the extent of the project.

Thanks again,

Steve
