I need to weigh my truck and trailer, for peace of mind, to be sure that I'm not over my max weight.
There is a Flying J that I pass daily but I don't know what their procedures are for weighing and I figured someone on here has done this. I tried calling them but found myself on eternal hold........
Can someone explain the procedure, do I contact them first, just drive on the scale and go in to get my weight or what????
Thanks in advance for the help

If it is a Certified Cat Scale just slowly drive onto it. There should be 3 seperate pads for you steer axle, drive axle and trailer axles. Push the button and talk to the attendant.
They just need to know that you are there so they know to print a ticket. At my flyng J, there is a phone close by. If they need to know anything else, they will ask you when you call.

Pull up on the scale, push the button. They will ask you what your truck number is, tell them private.
They will tell you to come on in.
You go in, pay them your money and get your print out.

Make sure you fill up first. Also make sure your trailer is loaded the way it is when you go camping or your just guessing. At least fill your tank.

Here in AZ, I paid $8.
I weighed my truck all by itself. It is the correct way to determine pin weight. Just have to make sure things are kept constant. i.e. full fuel, same stuff in bed, same passengers (or no passengers) etc.

Flying J calls their certified automated truck scale a "J Scale" instead of a "CAT" scale. But it's identical to a CAT scale, with three or four pads for different axles.
Cost is around $7 to $10, and a second weighing (a reweigh) a few minutes later is usually free. So fill up with fuel and weigh the entire rig, then collect and pay for your scale ticket. Tell the clerk you plan to reweigh in a few minutes. Then drop the trailer in the parking lot and reweigh just the tow vehicle without the trailer. Take your first scale ticket with you when you go to collect your "free" scale ticket - the clerk may have changed shifts or gone on break while you were messing around, and the first ticket will prove that this ticket is a reweigh.
The intercom to the desk is usually way up in the air, so the big boys can simply reach out and mash the button. But when I'm in the pickup, I must stand up on the window sill to reach the button.

Might also be a good deal to "axle out" your truck too. Weigh each axle individually. Give you a good idea of where the weight of your load is. Most places re-weigh for free or just a buck. Might as well take advantage of it. Your scale ticket will always be at the fuel desk where the big boys pay.

What I do is fill up the tanks and then go in and tell them I want to get weighed, and that I will be doing a second weigh in too. I give them my credit card and my name and when I get to the scale I press the button and say my name so forth. They then say ok or whatever and I go unhook my trailer and come back with just the truck and weigh that. Then I go get my ticket and pay. You might as well figure out the tongue weight, because the extra weigh in is only a $1 or less usually.
