Re: Weight capacity of my 5er pooper tube bumper on a fleetwood?

Hi Steve,

Something you need to consider is the center of pin to the axle center line.

Most of the smaller 5'rs are made so they can be pulled with a small pick-up thus have the axles located forward to remove pin weight.

Add 300lbs to the rear of one of those 5'ers and it won't pull well at all.

Buy UNION work UNION. It pays off in the long run
Define Union:
A labor Union is nothing more than united workers with a common goal for better working conditions.

We all are in some sort of labor Union, some are just larger than others with better working conditions!

T_Bone

You bring up a very valid point and that is something I would have to experiment with.

At this point I would like to make it work though, buying a TT or a toyhauler 5er is not really an option.

Re: Weight capacity of my 5er pooper tube bumper on a fleetwood?

468LC,
I had the same problem a couple of years ago, what you need to remember is the weight of the motorcycle is hanging off the bumper so it is actually increasing the load put on the bumper. What I did was bought a piece of 1/4" thick 4x4 square tube and welded it directly to the frame where I cut the old bumper off. Then I welded the receiver to the bumper with extra braces and gussets. You can still keep your sewer hose in the new bumper and the whole set-up is as strong as your frame. It worked great and looked factory....

Re: Weight capacity of my 5er pooper tube bumper on a fleetwood?

Like T-bone said, watch the weight on the back. A friend of my co-worker put a quad back there and it shifted too much weight behind the rear axle. He lost control and flipped the truck and trailer. Thankfully, everyone walked away.

Re: Weight capacity of my 5er pooper tube bumper on a fleetwood?

Do you have some more details on that one? What kind of truck and size and what kind of trailer?

That does not sound like fun for sure and I am glad to hear that no one was hurt badly.

This trailer that I have seems to have a fair amount of pin weight for it's size. It will squash my rear springs a good 3 inches or so.

Re: Weight capacity of my 5er pooper tube bumper on a fleetwood?

See my signature for a photo of what I tow.

Here is a link to the Hidden Hitch 82201 install I did. I added some .188 wall tubes under the frame and bolted the hitch to them. It gave me a nice drop too. My trailer sits high as it is. It weighs in around 11.5k and is about 32'-8" long. It has a looong rear overhang. There is some bounce associated with weight back there, but a 25' fifth wheel trailer shouldn't have a huge rear overhang. I only notice it when the jetski trailer (1200#) hits a bump. I can feel a slight nudge. It it were a TT, then the effect of the weight would be an issue.
