What do I need for trailer brakes if any?

I'm thinking of trailering my boat from Mass to the Florida keys next winter. I have the trailer registered for 4000lbs. GVW tandem axel, the GVW on the trailer tag is 4200lbs. and does not have or ever had any breaks, What can I exepct travelling through all the states I will on the way. The trailer will be just under the 4000lbs registered GVW fully loaded, do I need brakes on this set up because its so light? (the commercial plates on my truck is another, story all together) It will be my truck towing my boat what should I expect.

Re: What do I need for trailer brakes if any?

I don't know all the state laws but generally anything over 2500 lb. GVWR is required to have brakes. ** Just went and did a little homework @ roadmasterinc.com , use thier internal search window and type in "brake laws" to get a state by state listing of the specific brake requirements. You'll be thrilled when you see how consistent the requirements are amongst various states. Ha Ha. -- Perry.

Re: What do I need for trailer brakes if any?

Often the laws of the state that license the trailer are the ones that count in cases like this. Not a lawyer, so be gentle with me if I'm wrong.

Re: What do I need for trailer brakes if any?

Just throw some disc surge brakes on the front axle and you'll be glad you did.

Re: What do I need for trailer brakes if any?

I agree that brakes would be nice but they often aren't practical on a boat trailer. The salt water causes them to fail pretty quickly. Most boat trailers of the size that you are discussing do not have brakes. You should be careful about the law, especially in case you are in an accident, but they may not be practical.

Re: What do I need for trailer brakes if any?

Try this link. It is to Boat US's page on trailering laws.

Boat US Trailer Law Summary

I am pretty sure that it is the state that you are in, not the state that you are from, whose laws that you need to comply with. Pretty much - that means brakes to meet the most restrictive requirement that you will pass through. It's a light load, if you are not in the mountians, surge brakes will be fine. Get brakes on all wheels - many states will require that.

With a Super Duty - you would be fine without brakes (IMHO), except for the law, and if there was an accident and an investigation. I'd get them for the protection from the legal risks - as brakes are required in the most of the states you will pass thru to get to FL.

Re: What do I need for trailer brakes if any?

No one is going to bother you about having brakes on both axles with a boat that small. Just put disc brakes on the front axle and it will be fine. If you do end up with brakes on both axles, still get the disc brakes. They are better that the drum brakes in every way. Worth the extra upfront cost.

Re: What do I need for trailer brakes if any?

I hear ya I would need to replace the brand new axel to get one with backing plates on it any way. I have NEVER seen brakes on a boat trailer here in my life they would not last a year! and if I do, do something it will be disk, this is the first time I am suprrised by Mass law. This state is so liberal (sickening taxes and regulations)I thought for sure we had tight trailering laws and I would be all set elsewhere, well I'm wrong Mass is one the the loosest one on the east coast. 10000lbs and under, NO brakes, hence why I have never seen any. boy did I get and eye opener, sad thing is if I thought the truck/trailer needed them I would get them but at doesn't even feel the 3500lbs or so back ther and stops with ease If if didn't I would have brakes on it.

Re: What do I need for trailer brakes if any?

YankeeDiesel: I feel that you are right about the brakes at 3-4klbs - not really needed by a careful driver with a PSD. The problem is the law - it is the same for a minicar towing as a PSD. The real problems are legal, no brakes and one axle brakes won't keep you out of trouble - tickets, or God forbid, a negligence charge in an accident. For protection from these problems - you will need brakes.

I am surprised that the axles cannot have backing plates added. For a long interstate trip, no brakes is too much legal risk for me!

If you want scary - I was talking to a professional boat hauler the other day. Boat trailer brakes often don't work. Scary, they tow heavy (8-10klbs) boats over the Eisenhower grade (Rocky Mtns) all the time up to Dillon lake - no brakes. The downgrade after the tunnel is a killer. Yikes! Best o' Luck,

Re: What do I need for trailer brakes if any?

Yup fender bender would turn in to a lawsuit quick with no brakes. I did some looking and it would be easier for me to buy a new trailer than to do anything with this one, I could add backing plates but then I need new hubs and rims to match cause my rims have a funny four bolt pattern, so far I can't find a disk brake retofit kit, the only stuff I'm finding is replacement parts. good links above I got plenty of reading out of it.

Re: What do I need for trailer brakes if any?

Hi YD,

You can buy new Dexter 3500lb electric brake alxes for about $220/axle. There forward self adjusting to boot. Just unplug the cord before loading/launch and serivce them once a year should keep them in working order.
