What have you done to combat drag on your gn/5th wheel trailer???
My goose neck horse trailer is really causing a lot of drag and so much wind disturbance that heavy objects are being blown out of my bed at interstate speeds. What sort of things have you all done to combat this?? Thanks, Phillip
Re: What have you done to combat drag on your gn/5th wheel trailer???
I can't feel the drag, I just know it's there because things are being pitched right over the side of the bed....that and my mileage is down.
Re: What have you done to combat drag on your gn/5th wheel trailer???
i have 2 large trailers.....the trailswest has a really great aerodynamic front and pulls like a dream [about 10,000lbs gross loaded],then i have a custom ordered goosenek brand goosenek that has a large square front[for snoozin in !]and its like night and day it is so draggy and its not near as heavy as the trailswest.there is such a difference that i am seriously looking at having built or buying a aerodynamic front to rivit onto the blunt end.

CANAM, what type trailers are the two you mention??
One thing that must be taken into consideration, when discussing drag, is that exterior framed trailers, such as the Gooseneck brand, have a million little wind catchers down their sides that, all added together, amount to a considerable drag.
Also, brush-fender trailers, that terminate in a solid rear plate(where the tail-lights are), catch a lot of wind.
Re: What have you done to combat drag on your gn/5th wheel trailer???
your right...i hadn't considered all the other wind catchers on the goosenek brand and the general unaerodynamicness of an open stock trailer but smoothing the blunt front end i'm sure would help...its right up there in the airstream....like a 6ft x 2ft wall.

The majority of drag comes from the back of the trailer. Making the front end pointy doesn't help that much. Look at aircraft. They can be very blunt up front but the backends always taper off.

Re: What have you done to combat drag on your gn/5th wheel trailer???
hauling stock over the years [on dirt roads] i have found trailers that have almost solid sides and are 50% open at the back end suck in dust so bad that it blankets the animals, but open sides and back on a trailer creates no "vacuum" back of the front end....in still conditions i can lay a plume of dust a mile long and the animals are as clean as a whistle.BUT...i suppose there is still drag created...i still think if i could fair the front end [cheaply]it would be worth trying.

You want some drag, back a 2030 JD with a 6ft round bale over the nose of a flat bed and see what happens. I thought the brakes were on when I tried to get over 45MPH.

I bought a V-nose . All kidding aside, V-nose or not, you will always get some weird wind turbulance in the bed with a gooseneck hooked up. Before I bought mine, guys told me fairly heavy stuff that you'd bet would NEVER blow out sure will. They were right.

Canam, couldn't agree more. My fully loaded V-nose 3-horse (7000 lbs.+-) pulls pretty much the same as my fairly square front end 23' gooseneck travel trailer (5000 lbs.+-)
