I am in the process of selling my IH Scout II which is still in Colorado, and I have had several people ask me about delivering it to them, some of them pretty far away, and I am curious as to what kind of fuel ecomoney I could expect?
I have a 87 F-350 4X4 SRW, it has the 6.9 diesel with a 4-speed tranny. I *THINK* my gear ratios are 3.55 (I forgot the axle code, but it is the lowest gears it came with)
What I will be towing is a IH Scout II with 37 inch tires on it (the tires are kinda heavy), and it will all be on a flatbed, I figure the total trailer weight will be somewhere between 6000 and 8000 pounds.
Just about all the driving will be highway.
Like I said some of these places are pretty far away, so a slight miscalc on my part could really add up for me.
I thank you all for info you could provide

Re: What kind of fuel ecomony can I expect towing?
Highway driving pulling a comparable weight load I've always gotten 10-13. Generally it's 10 to 11.+, the time I got 13, I was ticked off over the price of fuel (like nowdays) and was driving like I had an egg under my right foot and didn't go over 60MPH. I have a 3:55 with a 5 speed. You posted you have the lower geared rearend, so yours would not be the 3:55, which would mean more fuel comsumption.
Re: What kind of fuel ecomony can I expect towing?
Figure a minimum of 25 to 30 cents per mile for just diesel. The unloaded return trip should be a little better, so maybe 20 to 25 cents per mile.

Re: What kind of fuel ecomony can I expect towing?
If it's a 3.55, plan on spending lots of time in 3rd gear.
Is your gear shift a straight shaft or is it bent. The ones with the bent shaft are the old granny 4 speeds with a low first gear.
However, my grandad had a 4 speed with a straight shaft (and no granny gear) and it had trouble taking off on slopes with a load (granted his load was a backhoe).
Re: What kind of fuel ecomony can I expect towing?
I normally get around 20 US miles per gallon (had to do the math there combined driving. However most my driving is from Sooke, BC to somewhere in Victoria and back, so at least half of it if not more is spent in 4th gear just cruseing. I also am a VERY consertive driver, I always just tool down the road, not drag raceing anyone or stuff like that.

Re: What kind of fuel ecomony can I expect towing?
I tow a 10,000 trailer and most of the time get around 10 MPG. However, the truck is turbocharged and has a 5 speed. I use 5th gear any time I can.
