Looks like the hitch broke. I have rear (blocks) to avoid damage to truck when loading tractors/heavy stuff. (trailer came with them) Still 17 ton (IIRC) is more then I would consider of cargo. (esp with 10 ton trailer)
I forgot rear stands once and loaded 110hp tractor and it dang near lifted rear of pickup in air.

The hitch didn't break. The trailer popped off the ball or the pintle was not locked down.
No biggie. We have had that happen to us at our marina once or twice.
We also have had our hitch break off with our hydraulic trailer. Hitch looked like it had a crack for a long time. Broke right off going down the road, trailer dug right into the pavement and came to a abrupt hault in the middle of the road. Thankfully no boat on.

NO biggie! In april, I bought a forklift that was supposed to be 14K, ended up, loaded on the trailer pulled with my 2001 F250 I grossed at 44,000 lbs. The only thing the guy at the scale asked was what kind of motor you got in that thing? Only a FORD would have hauled it!!!

I'd have to agree. I wouldn't think the weight of the truck would break the hitch. I bet the ball either popped off, or the pintle lock pin sheared off.

That's great. Reminds me of trying to load a bobcat on a trailer... without the truck. Oh, and to make things more fun, a 3" jump from ground to ramp. It took me 10 minutes of chasing that trailer all over creation with the bobcat, but I did get it loaded. That was the last time they (rental company) insisted that we reload something without the truck that they unloaded with a truck. No, I didn't break or bend anything. The boss reamed them a new one when they came to pick it up. Picture it in your mind... Bobcat pulling wheelies to get the front tires on the trailer, without hitting the end of the trailer on the underside of the bobcat(which send the trailer rolling). Then running forward onto the trailer so it doesn't fly out from underneath, but no so fast as to overshoot the front end. Oh, and by the way, try to get it to stop really close to the axle so it doesn't slam down on the jack. On a nice smooth wood deck.
Oh, what fun!

How do you know?

If the hitch broke lifting up the rear of a 3/4 ton, It would break driving through the field pulling a 35000 lb tractor plus trailer. How much does the rear end weigh 3000 lb at most right? I second the idea of a pintle hitch unlatched or a hitch popping off the ball.
on another note why the he#$ did he not have some kind of jack or something holding up the rear of the trailer
I'm surprised the trailer didn't try and shoot forward and put a hole in his tailgate. But agreed that the pintle latch failed.

Yep, happens all the time with tag trailers like that. Those hitches take a beating after while (might have even had wrong ball size) and get worn out, they love to "jump track" so to speak! More than likey the trailer has a 2 5/16" ball and ding dong in truck had a 2".
That guy should have kept a pintle hitch set up on that trailer. It might have still picked up the rear of the truck (good way to break the parking gear in the trans) but at least it wouldnt have tore the hell out of the truck.
I wont even comment on the actual act of hauling a bulldozer with a pickup truck
