What tune to use?

I will be towing a 16' box trialer from Mo to Az next week. I have a 7.3l. My truck has the fallowing mods. K&N intake, 4" turbo back and a preditor tuner. It has a 40hp tow tune 60hp econmy tune. I'm not sure what would be better. I know that my fuel milage will not be that great. Any help would be greatful.

Re: What tune to use?

I prefer classic rock............. J/K. Just do some experimenting and see which ones tow best while keeping your egt's in range, and also getting the best mpg.

Re: What tune to use?

I don't know what type of weights you are hauling but most of it will depend on your chip and how the tune is written. This is why a pyrometer is a must with a chip or tuner. I know with Jody's tunes the 80 tow is for 5K and less, 60 tow is 5K-10K and the 40 tow is for 10K+ but you can't compare his tunes to what you have, so watch your Pyrometer.

Re: What tune to use?

I also had the predator programmer before I bought one of Tony Wildman's 4 pos chips. I basically used the +60hp to tow my 30' (9,500lbs) 5th wheeler on the flats and then would use the +40hp tow on the steeper grades/mountains. Either setting didn't push the EGT's overboard. Like mentioned above, just drive by the guages & see which one yields better gas milage for you.

P.S. The predator will increase the line pressure to your tranny in order to firm up the shifts. This is no good for the tranny in the long run - if you do not have a valve body planned soon I would go into the advanced settings of the predator and return the shift options back to stock.

Re: What tune to use?

I tow in the 50 setting and the 75 setting and never really have any egts the highest I get is 1200 and it just stays their on hills. Need to have at least a pyro gauge to moniter your egts.

How much are you towing?

Re: What tune to use?

I used Jody's 80 at 19200 GCW, never got hot and was in the left lane more than the right from Vegas to Virginia 12+ mpg. I sure hope with a little tuning the 6.0 can run like the 7.3 did

BTW if anyone is looking I bought an 07, got that computer and a few other goodies available off the 02, see my sig

Re: What tune to use?

I've used my DP 80-Econo tune to pull by 8K fiver thousands of miles.

The only problem with EGT's was on one long climb in Wyoming. On climbs I drive using the boost and pyro gauges to hold optimum speed, EGT and boost numbers.

With this tuner I have found that towing at 72mph I get 11mpg, at 68mph (2000rpm) I get 13.5mpg. The mileages are manually calculated and verified over 7000 miles.
