When I was a teenager, a neighbor took me to work with him for a day and let me drive ... a pair of 1500-Hp locomotives and about fifty cars, about four million pounds.

Mine is pretty small in actual weight but probably 5 or more times the tow rating of the vehicle (if it even HAD a tow rating).
Chevette diesel (52 hp) towing a 2500 lb trailer 300 miles from Youngstown, OH to Cincinnati, OH not once but twice. Hitch was a steel tab bolted to the bottom of an aluminum bumper with a hitch ball on it. No brakes. No brains. Second trip I could not get over 45 mph on the interstate so I ran the surface roads to keep from being run over.
I know, I know - but I did survive and have learned my lesson.

In 1980, Chevrolet's marketing geniuses "towed" about a 30-foot boat trailer with a then-newly-introduced front-wheel-drive Citation. They cobbled together a rigid "hitch" and removed the rear wheels from the Citation.
They, too, suggested not repeating the exercise.

Pulled a wagon load of soy beans across the scales once with a 2005 Dodge 2500 CTD 6 spd. Scale ticket said 44,000 gross. Had no problems with power, but didn't feel too good getting pushed around. Wagon had 4 wheel surge brakes. Another neighbor was pulling a set of 2 wagons all day with a simialr setup, had to weigh over 50k. Been hauling corn to the elevator with a JD 8120 and am short loading the wagons cause the scale only goes to 100,000. First load was tractor and 2 wagons at 99,560. Scaled 93 to 97,000 all day long.

And what sort of trailer brakes? (as if I gotta ask)[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ] of course, no brakes. The scariest part was the hitch bolted to the aluminum bumper that I could bend with my bare hands.
Better to be lucky than good on THAT one!

Gross weight was 164,359 lbs.
Pulled it with a Pete, but wishin I was in a PSD
Moved a relative across country - 42k of household stuff on the gooseneck (which had a dry weight of 5500lbs). Exhaust brake, trailer brake, and prayer. Got 8mpg average and more turbo flutter than I like. And I agree - I didn't like getting pushed around that much either.
My wife got me airbags for christmas after that.

Allis Chalmers or IH dozer, can't remember which, but bigger than a D-9, with blade and ripper. Pulled with an International with a poor overworked 8V71, but it always did OK in the steep country thanks to a gear for every occasion, 5 X 4 gearboxes.
110,000lbs on a new Frieghtliner 112SD with a Cat 600HP and 18spd Fuller. The truck was a tri-axle roll-off pulling another roll-off trailer. Both boxes were full of construction debris, overloaded by the contractor and then got rained on. DMV was not impressed with our weight and it cost about $5,000.00 in fines . The truck however pulled the loaded with ease and it pulled hills at better than 75mph with just the split of a gear
really excited to load up my new "Tow-Boss" and see what it will do

Back before I put the PSD in my 72, I had right at 35K on the trailer, and the truck and trailer weighed another 14,500. Only pulled about 100 miles, but the truck did pretty good. Trailer had 4 wheel vacuum over hydraulic disc, and they stopped it really well. When we moved from Missouri to Idaho, my 72 and a 24 foot stock trailer weighed 26,100 full of fuel with me in it. That was more than enough for a trip that long.
