Load: John Deere 244J compact loader, wieght no more than 12K,lbs.
Total load 17K lbs or 8.5 tons
Now I am not talking about going cross country but local distance within 50 miles. I don't want to damage truck be illegal etc. It is for my business so the other question begs do I need a CDL for this load? Want to maintain and ensure my insurance covers it.

IMO in MN you would be fine. Now as business you better check with DMV/DOT in your state on BOTH questions.
My truck 1989 F-250 srw 7.3 ATS turbo. I have legally pulled (with MN-DOT looking it over) over 18k lbs (cargo) on trailer. All they cared is do lights work? are the tires less then (IIRC) 500lbs per sq in of contact surface, the lightest component (tires or axle) is MORE then load on that axle/tire load. And brakes of course.
Some (assumptions check the actual numbers) Your trailer has 3 6000lb axles? (maybe 7200 or more?) so 6000x3+ 18000 lbs for trailer axles. Figure some weight for truck (I tend to put MORE rather then less on truck) lets say 1500 lbs You are withing limits of trailer/truck. (if memory serves)
But you must check local laws.
For business use, YOU HAULING IT FOR YOU OWN BUSINESS,,(Grading, Excavating. Ect...) I dont belive you will need a CDL. IF YOU were hauling for money, and have your own transport authority, like I do..(However right now I only have 26k plates) a CDL would be needed... if I step up on trailer and load then I also will need a Class "A" in Missouri I know.
But if your a "contractor" and haul endloaders, skid steers,,,and such.
I think your covered legaly state wise.. CONTACT your insurance agent for that part. If it is for your business,,then I imagine your business insurance will cover it. You may need a "Rider" for the policy, who knows.

thanks guys...I am sure my insurance will cover it as long as I am not overloaded and/or in non-compliance with state/fed laws. I am hauling for my own internal business use between my commerical owned locations and my home/farm.
The real question is will the truck handle the load legally and physically without damage etc.
Assuming a truck wieght of 8000lbs + 5000lbs,trailer and 12,000lbs loader = 25,000lbs total wieght.
Towboss is supposed to give you 19K towing capacity plus truck for a total allowable of 26K...

You might want to weigh your truck and trailer empty on a certified scale, my F250 and econoline 29' 12 ton tilt deck weighs in at like 15,000 empty.
As long as you are under 26k combined and stay within your state, not doing "for-hire" hauling, you shouldn't need a CDL, but check with your state, just to be sure. States do vary on regulations.
I've pulled 38k lbs combined, with my F250, and didn't break anything, but that's another story.

Yes the equipment is capable of going from point A to point B with that load.
It can do it without breaking anything.
You will be within "legal" limits weather or not you are within Fords recomendations.
Is the DRIVER capable?
The driver is what is going to make this "Safe" or not.
Some people aren't "Safe" in a truck that is empty.
Being "Legal" isn't going to make anyting "Safe" nor is having lots of insureance.
If you or your driver kills someone, does it really matter if you were legal or right or wrong??? The person is still DEAD & YOU did it.

Thanks for the info guys...I thought I was alright...but I've been wrong before...just ask my wife
As for the driver being safe...yes that could be another story...but considering it is me and I have driven and hauled large loads many times with no problems, I am not concerned.
When its your insurance but ultimately your "ass" and checkbook on the line you don't take chances....
