wiring 7way to winch

Ive got a ft dovetail trailer with a 4500 lb winch that currently run off a car battery. I want to wire it up so I wont have to carry the car battery or jump it to my truck battery to operate the winch.

How do I hook it up to the 7 way to run the winch?

Planned upgrades are a new and better turbo and larger exhaust pipes than the 21/2s that are already under the rig/ would like a 6 spd tranny but dont know if that is a feasable or smart investment yet.

Re: wiring 7way to winch

I don't think any of the lines in the 7 pin connector are rated to carry more than 30 amps. The trailer battery charge circuit is on a 30 amp fuse and relay, but that is probably the highest capacity circuit you could run. I would guess that even a small winch like the one you're talking about would draw more than that.

Re: wiring 7way to winch

I second needing heavier wire than you will have in the trailer wiring harness. The winch will pull a lot of juice under a heavy load.

You can get welding cable for an electric welder or get some 4 gauge or so wire from an electrical supply house to run the wiring to the back of the truck, make up another cable from the winch to run along side the trailer light cord and use a separate plug like is used to hook the power from a truck to an electric liftgate - looks like a tractor-trailer plug but only has two posts. Any trailer sales place should be able to help you out.

Re: wiring 7way to winch

THIS SOCKET would go on the back of the truck, connected directly to your off side battery (probably driver side) with appropriate breaker protection. Use 4 gauge wire, you have a pretty good run to carry the juice.

THIS PLUG would be used on the trailer, wired to the winch with 4 gauge cable. It can carry 100 amps which should be plenty even when trying to start the winch with a full load on it.

Re: wiring 7way to winch

another option, is to run welding lead disconnects, or the plugs that the charger for an electric foklift uses.

On my trailer, I just mounted a group 29 battery in a marine box, and keep it charged with the charge wire in the 7 pin connector, which is on a self resetting circuit breaker, so if it ever draws over 30 amps, it will just pop the breaker.

OK I guess this is the route I will take. Ill weld a "table" to hold the battery like on the TTs and with the charge wire from the 7 pin connector.....thanks.....

I THIRD THIS!!!

ANother option would be run a LONG pair of battery cables back to the rear, put a "Fork lift" style battery connector on it and your winch, then plug it in, and kick the AIC to "Charge Protect" when you need it,, that is going to be my plan, I also will have the winch on a receiver so I can remove it, and use it on two different trailers, I agree on not wanting to mess with "Dead batts" on the trailers!

This is basically what I did with mine. 10k winch on a receiver (for front or rear of the truck, also mounts on the trailer), 4 gauge welding cables (+ & -) from truck batteries to the front and rear (through pvc pipe) of the truck. All connections are "blue" forklift connectors. To hook from truck to winch when it's mounted on the trailer, I had to make a 4' jumper wire. I also made a set of 4 gauge jumper cables with "blue" connectors on one end so I could use the winch on my '95 Nissian "beater truck" or anyone elses that I might need it on.

Re: wiring 7way to winch

Very cool idea to make a plug in jumper cable too,, you could use this either way, to jump another vehicle, or to hook the jumpers to another batt and run the winch,, I'll remember that!

Re: wiring 7way to winch

I have plans to do the same and this has been a very useful thread. I was not aware of the 100amp 2 pin connectors. Are the blue forklift connectors something different from this? Thanks to everyone who contributed!

Yes they are different. The forklift connectors come in different amp sizes denoted by color. These are like the ones I'm talking about.
