01 chevy 6.5 turbo diesel smoke

ok im not a diesel guy but i am a mechanic so i have a basic understanding of the basics of diesel i just don't have any experience. Now the problem is my buddys 01 chevy 6.5ltr (I think) diesel seems to smoke when the truck idles for a min. you sit at a stop light for like 3 min and then when you take off it puffs a little blue smoke. my first instinct was the turbo but im not so sure after reading some other stuff on glow plug issues. I do performance upgrades and tune gasoline engines using wide band so i know what color smoke means but i don't know if maybe diesel smokes blue?? anyway anyone with any knowledge please help. Thank you in advance.

Although there are some very good mechanics on this site, you might be able to search the forums at "the diesel place" website and get some answers.

I think all 01s were Duramax. You really need to know for sure what motor the truck has before we can help.

Smoke at idle could be from many sources.

1. Bad turbo seals allowing incomplete burn of the oil.
2. Too much blow by, but I think that should be seen under power as well.
3. CCV letting too much oil out of it.
4. It could be over fueling at idle as well.

I think in 01 there was a option for the maxi or 6.5, but people are right you need to find out what motor it is.

Sounds to me like it needs injectors.

if it's an 01 then it's a D-Max, if the truck has less then 200,000 miles on it check the fuel in the oil, when you find it. then take to a stealership and get a new set of injectors. this is the poor filtration taking out the injectors by ball seat erosion. you can also use your scantool and do injector kill test to find a leaking injector, also try cylinder balance rates. this will show a bad injector.

The 6.5L was replaced with the 6.6L Duramax in 2001. Some heavy duty 1 ton "classic" models might still have the 6.5L in 2001, but very few.

The 6.5L is still being produced for military and industrial purposes.

glow plugs have nothing to do when idling at a stop light. blue smoke means you are burning oil, But diesel fuel is an oil. so it could be a number things.

With the Dodge advertisements and now Chevy posts, is this still a Ford diesel forum???

The 6.5 was still an option in '01; my late-wife's father still has the one he bought new.

My vote is for injectors.
