6-71 Detroit question

Hi, My name is justin from nh. When I was younger my father had a 84 ford L9000 which this truck was the first thing i ever drove. He sold it on me six years ago. I finally found the truck and bought it back. It had a 238 hp detroit 6-71. When i got it back someone had put a turbo on it. Looking at pictures of 6-71t's online, it appears that it was properly installed. my question is that, is this engine designed to handle that kind of turbo, or is it going to kill itself by having boost it was never designed to have? if anyone has and ideas or suggestions i would love to hear them. thanks alot.

What kind of turbo is it? Is it the same kind of turbo that the 6-71t engines have? Increasing hp of an engine will generally shorten its longevity. The amount of decreased longevity depends upon how much extra power and torque you now have.

The 671s never had turbos, they were supercharged like all the Detroit two cycle engines. Are you sure thats not what you are looking at?

There were plenty of factory turbocharged 6-71s. I've got one. It's just a big turbo that feeds the supercharger. If I remember correctly, the only difference between a turbo and non-turbo engine is that the turbo version has 1/2 point lower compression ratio. The turbo engines were available in 250, 260, and 270 horsepower versions. The only difference was the injector size.
