air intake heaters

I am looking for the intake heater that is used on the 99 and up powerstrokes. I am trying to keep my KW truck from smoking after it is started on cold mornings and thought maybe one of these heaters would do the trick. Thanks

Re: air intake heaters

You probably won't notice much difference between having the AIH and not having it. I couldn't tell a difference in smoke at all. Unfortunately I did throw mine away.

Is it excessive smoke? If so I'd start looking at the glow plug system if I were you. Otherwise it should be minimal white smoke out the tailpipe until it begins to warm a bit.

Re: air intake heaters

I've got mine stored in a drawer. But, being in CA you never know when they'll start diesel engine smog inspections like they do on the gassers. So, I'm hanging on to mine - - - sorry.

Re: air intake heaters

I think I have at least 2 around, but can't sell em though, sorry. What year KW and what model engine? You may either have some base engine problems, pump calibration incorrect, or even normal wear & tear.

Pocket, no glow plugs on pretty much any large diesel, so that wouldn't be an issue on that truck. Also, the AIH should not make any difference in smog emission testing, shouldn't affect the test results with opacity and tailpipe emissions on a properly operating engine.

Oops, I kinda skimmed over the part where he mentioned his KW.

But I do agree that the AIH won't do anything for emissions testing. Your engine should be at full operating temps when tested, and the AIH is only used when the motor is stone cold.

Re: air intake heaters

the truck is a 88 KW W900 with a big cam 4 that we have converted to a high flow cooling system. It was originally a low flow cooling system, and they had heating issues bad. We upped the hp from 400 to 500 hp using parts from Diesel Injection and their timing recommendation to put this together and now we can't keep it warm at an idle, doesn't even build heat working it, but man does it go. Also put an air to air aftercooler on it. Just trying to find something to heat up the air a little at idle especially when the air temp is cold outside.

Re: air intake heaters

Just my opinions.
I don't think heating the intake air is going to help.
Smoking on cold mornings is normal with a jacked big cam, but, not coming up to full operating temp under load is not normal.
Could be as simple as needing new/different thermostats and a winter front.
Or in need of setting "running" the overhead.
Maybe manifold pressure leaks are a cause for some of the smoke.
Maybe you got the Cpl.'s mixed up.

After checking the above,

Excessive smoke after warm-up would lead me to guess the pump is turned up too much.
If it wont warm up, over fueling can cool em off and cause smoke.
Faulty pump or in need of pump work (springs, button, calibration), or, injector issues.
Which BC4, cam, do you have, the .226 inj travel or the .224, the pump man will need to know.
If he says he doesn't, in my opinion you need a new pump man.

The inj's are hard on the cam after fuel psi has been increased, if stock get the pump redone for stock injectors. If you already have bigger inj's you may have enough fuel to use a 4 series holset, that will clear up some smoke. Don't let big injectors idle for long, its hard on everything and will cause cool down and smoke.

Messing with the timing will make em smoke until full operating temp is reached.
Most of the time retarding the timing on a hot rod big truck will help it live longer.
On a NTC after warm up it shouldn't smoke (without your foot in it)maybe a light haze, if everything's set right.
Maybe you got the wrong offset key. It is a 0.070, right.

If its a MVT the actuator piston could be rusty and the timing may be stuck in advanced mode, makes-em smoke warm or cold, they offer an auto oiling system for this, it works well.
I don't understand why you need to mess with the timing for this small increase in power.
IMO you see more problems like this in the 600-800hp range.

Start with the simple stuff, you shouldn't be having these problems with a BC4 with an extra 100 hp, it should behave just like a stocker if its set up right.
Just my opinions. Might get more help in the general diesel forums ...R

Re: air intake heaters

Being a big cam, no matter what you do, it will smoke. Especially if it is turned up.

Re: air intake heaters

Look into a coolant block heater for your rig. Check with your engine manufacturer for the correct one. I have seen some come in the shop with their generator in the back or on the side of the frame. They have the coolant heater connected to the generator electrically.

Re: air intake heaters

one of the problems with the big cam 4 is compression ratio, it is 14 to1. Pitsburgh diesel said that i would have trouble since I took off the water aftercooler and put on an air to air aftercooler. I don't recall the offset on the cam key but it is what they recomended. Pump, injectors and turbo all came from these guys, and the turbo is a big Holset, H4? anyway it will put out 35 lbs of manifold pressure and no smoke. I am hoping that an intake heater would make up for some of the lost heat due to no water aftercooler

Re: air intake heaters

My N14 woulndt build heat when working either, even with new thermostat. Ended up being the seal the tstat pushes into. The t stat should push in tight. Then run the truck with rad cap off for about an hr with all water valves open and heaters on hi for an hr or so to make sure all air pockets are purged. That cleared up my smoking and my hetaer started blowing warm air and gauge showed normal temps. Good luck.

Re: air intake heaters

tupco, I don't have any hands on experience with a N14, but Bruce Mallinson at Pittsburgh Power, would be the Man that can solve any Cummins problem. They sure would be at the top of My short list.
