Another diesel option I wish we had here

Volkswagen?s Clean-Diesel, 70-mpg Polo May Head Stateside: Test Drive - Popular Mechanics

For the commuter the thing smashes the prius in fuel economy. I could really see myself in one of these.

Thumbs up

Yep - bring it. It'd be well worth the premium on diesel fuel.

hey, why not bring over the lupo also. It would be a perfect commuter vehicle. Especially in large cities where parking is a tight and with milage in the 80-90 mpg range. I would buy one in a heartbeat to drive myself back and forth to work. I also heard that a company in europe was retrofittling the lupo engine on a motorcycle. They are expecting milage in the 120-150 mpg range when they finish. That would be a great summer ride.
The only question that I have about the polo in why is it only a four passenger vehicle. I own a 1984 vw rabbit which looks about the same size as the polo and it is a five passenger vehicle. It seats the three kids(one pre-teen and two teens) comfortably in the back.
These would be great vehicles to have in the U.S. I read an article that staited that the only thing that kept the lupo from coming into the U.S. market years ago was legislation passed by al gore made specifically to keep these high milage diesels off the market. He had a lot of money tied up in big oil at the time. Now that he has gone green and vw has made these diesels clean. Maybe we will actually see these in the U.S.

Over driving a F-150 or F-250/350 simply as a idiotic waste as a commuter car!

Id have to see the lupo in person to get a feel for the size. If I was commuting at least an hour a day the lupo would look a lot sexxier but Im not. As far as multi purpose commuter cars go that polo looks like a winner.

I went out to my father in laws last night for dinner. He lives about a 60+mile commute from anchorage so I decided to count car to suvs and see what people that had to commute drove. Came to about 60% trucks suvs and 40% cars. That was significantly better than the 80% suv average Im seeing around town. I guess its because people here want 4 wheel drives and subarus are slightly overpriced because there is only 1 dealer. Its brutal to get them off sticker, expect months of negotiating.

The Official Website for Volkswagen UK : Volkswagen UK
Looks like a sticker price of $20,500. Anyone know anything about tariffs?

Im thinking a mpg is different in brittain. So if they are using imperial gallons it figures out to 63 mpg. Anyone know how fuel is measured in the UK?

It is really frustrating that all the vehicles you'd want to buy to offset the fuel prices aren't available here. Ity makes you want to wring the necks of all politicians and bureaucrats who talk free trade, but don't practice it. The smaller Lupo seems to be available in Mexico. It has even better mileage.

There was no market for them. With fuel at 2 and 3 dollars a gallon we are pretty spoiled. Its 9 dollars a gallon in brittain and my friend in norway tells me she is paying almost 12. If you were paying 10 dollars a gallon you might think a little bit harder about how many miles you can get out of 1 gallon .

That policy is made in Detroit, not Washington.
