I had to recently sell my 2006 Dodge ram 2500 4door short bed 4x4 SLT 4x4 Cummins. I miss that truck badly, ive owned 11 vehicles and that was my only diesel. It was my 3rd dodge truck and my 3rd ford. All the dodges i have owned took the abuse i put on them pretty well, i cannot say the same for the fords, but none of them were in the heavy duty catagory either.
I really didnt want to sell it, but me being 26 and putting all my savings into buying a home last year tapped me out, when i had a roomate do me dirty and up and leave, leaving me in debt i was a lil tight, then a situation at work where someone wished to commit suicide by cop left me on the desk for about 3 months losing about 1200 a month in overtime, it was time for the dodge to go.
After tax time i will be purchasing a 2006 or newer 4x4 diesel, preferbly 1ton, not 3/4. I am doing my research this time and not buying on the whim.
DODGE 3500 CTD: I like the dependability of the cummins, strong motor and components and the new 6speed auto has me a lil less skeptical. The look of the truck isnt bad at all but i was having wierd electrical issues with my 06 before i sold it. Mostly on the dash in regards to blinkers and hazards not going off when needed, or the wrong direction, or when not needed at all. I also had the blower resistor go and the passenger side mirror motor, but i think the dealership broke it when fixing the glass that popped out haha. All in all i knew it was a dependable truck minus a few glitches.
FORD F350: What i know is that they look a hell of a lot better and the new dash configuration as compared with the earlier super duties is much more appealing. I love the larger cab and the more HEAVY duty truck appearance. What i am not sure about is the 6.0 powerstroke. With all the EGR issues and head and head gasket/stud issues i have heard nightmares of it really scares me off. I want a ford cause i really want to be a ford guy for many of reasons, mostly not taking money from the government in the form of a bailout.
Im not sure which way to go guys. I dont plan on upgrading turbos and making tons of power. I would like an intake, exhaust and a minimal programmer, and defintely a way to monitor my vitals, probably an edge monitor or something digital. Im a K9 handler for my police department here and use my truck for play, Hunting, fishing, trailering ATV's and boats. On the side i do some contracting work with a friend and at the most it would be a flat bed with a skid steer needing to be towed. I do plan on a 6" kit with 35s for my final look. It will not be a 100% work truck getting beat on but i want it to be able to take whatever i throw at it, with common sense on my side.
Lastly, I love a manual 6speed. Somethin bout the sound of a diesel rolling through those gears with a nice exhaust note really sets things off. I know autos can be dependable but theres just confidence in knowing that 6speed manual is gear driven with no clutches to wear or slip. I do not like slippage. this will be my last truck for a long long time and i want it to be able to last.
Can i get some help, i came here cause it seemed pretty nuetral. Any ideas guys?
I would stay clear of the 6.0 if you can, just my opinion based on my limited experience with them. If you can afford it Id say go with the 6.4, these things are turning out to be a beast of a truck, and best of all the transmissions are stout. After my 7.3 Ill likely get 6.4 or one of the last 5.9 CR.
I happen to like the common rail 5.9 cummins, I really dont think you can go wrong with either, you just are gonna deal with some fit and finish with the dodge truck. In the end, it may come down to what kind of deal you can get on either.
Good luck

Thanks for the advice. I was worried about the 6.0. I didnt think i could afford an 08, being my limit will be upper 20s but im willing to travel up to 400 miles to buy. looking at truck@trader. com i have found some viable options. it would be no question as to what to get if i can swing an 08, being after the new year they will be 2 years old its only gonna get better for me. thanks.
if your commited to ford, i d suggest the last of the 7.3 s.....but they re not without some issues....my buddies 02 ? has a rotted oil pan....repairs qouted as much as 2800 bucks....
i recently traded my 06 gmc lbz dmax for a 09 dmax.....dealer gave me 28k? for slt cc long box 4x4 loaded up.. lbz engine seems to be a fav almost the gm fans.....the 09 has the lmm series engine with particulate trap......8k on that so far without problems..( i ll be impressed also at 100k without problems)

Well im committed to the dodge or ford. i like the looks of the chevy, but i will not own another IFS truck. If the ford came with the duramax or cummins it would a done deal.

as for the 7.3. i dont believe financing would be an option for one, and seeing how much people want for a 7.3 i dont have that cash layin around ya know.
First, this is coming from a committed owner of a Ford 7.3 diesel which I literally intend to drive until I die.
That said, if I was buying new today, I'd buy the Cummins and take the Dodge that comes with it. Cummins has been using the same engine now since 2007 and IMO they have worked out most of the problems. IMO, the Cummins & Dodge would be by far the most reliable.
Ford, sorry to say, had new or significantly changed diesel engines in 2003, 2007, and again for the 2010 models... though maybe not until Jan 1 production. That means none of their diesels have been made more than 3 years in a row... not a recommendation IMO for reliability.
If I were looking for a used late-model diesel, it would be a Dodge 2006 model.... they had 3 years to work out the bugs and IMO, Cummins knows diesel better than most. If I were just good ole' me, I'd search for a 2002/2003 7.3 liter Ford, buy it and drive it a long, long time.

Buy A 07 Ford. Pick Up A 200k Plan Drive It Until It Dies Then Put A Cummings In It. Check Out Powerstrokehelp.com It's About 10,000 To Do The Swap. There Are 6.0 With 450k And Up.
Welll i cant get financed for a 7.3. banks wont lend money on a vehicle that old. I cannot afford to flat out buy a truck either. so the swap is defintely out of question. im gonna go with a recent dodge or 08 ford. thanks guys.
