Cat 3176

I've been taking lessons to get my CDL, and we got a new (to us) truck recently. It's a '94 Freightliner with a Cat engine and a Super 10. I finally found out that the engine is a 3176, 350 hp. It feels kind of gutless compared to the C12-powered Pete we were using, but the wheelbase is shorter so it's quite a bit easier in the backing events.

Anyway, I'm curious about the 3176 engine. I'd never heard of it, except for a post by Birken Vogt a few months ago which mentioned them in passing. I did a search and didn't find much. I know from looking it over (hooray for practice pre-trips ) that it's electronic. If my math is right, it's a 10.2 liter. That seems a little small for a semi.

Are they good engines? What years were they built? What else did they come in?

BTW, the "new" Freight Shaker has 847,000 miles.

Re: Cat 3176

The 3176 was the 1st engine designed by cat. to be all electronic from the ground up. You are right, it is 10 ltr, it also has a two piece engine block (top, bottom) that has been somewhat problematic for cat. They only made the 3176 for appx.3-4 yrs, it was replaced by the C-10, A much more reliable, (1 piece block) engine that made up to 370 hp and 1100 lbft tq.
