I am not too concerned about "right now" -- Cat has pretty much admitted they can't keep up with the (IMHO) unreasonable demands of the EPA, and will be exiting the truck (on-road) engine market when 2010 emissions take effect.

The trucks I'm looking at range from basically 1987 to 2000, and 2000 year model trucks are generally too expensive for my budget unless they're completely trashed. I've been deliberating between the 3406B (easier construction, fewer sensors to break, and somewhat silly: better sound) and the 3406E (more familiar to modern shops, better fuel mileage, more HP and tuning options) -- I've been avoiding the 3406C for the "bridge engine" reasons of it being a hybrid between the B and E.

1997 Pete with Caterpillar 3406E

So it looks like I'm ending up with a 1997 Peterbilt with a 3406E, which I'm pretty happy with. Beyond changing injector maps and reprogramming the ECM, I've seen some threads indicating there are simple things you can do to get more power, e.g. from here: http://www.dieselenginetrader.com/di...adid=2493#4575

Any thoughts on this?

Also, I do get one shot at programming at least some values into the ECM -- things like min and max rpm, disable idle shutoff and disable the speed governor. Are there any other parameters I should keep in mind?

Thanks,

-Stian
