Class 8 trucks

I was informed by my shop manager that Clatterpillar is getting out of the heavy duty and medium duty ON HiGHWAY truck engine market. He did not state the source. I find this a loss for class 8 trucks and lower. Anytime a major change in compitition the others step up and have a advantage of lack of compitition.
On the other hand the Prevost bus company is NOT going to install the products from DC in their coaches. [Series 60 and MBE and the new DD15].
Other news is that Freightliner is going to install the Comapart engine as an OPTION in their trucks.

The next few years should be interesting.

I started a thread a couple of weeks ago after I ran across an article that touched on what is going to happen. Apparently CAT will stop producing on-highway truck engines. They are forming an alliance with Navistar and will offer CAT branded Navistar Maxx force engines. They will also work together and design a new severe service line of trucks that will be exclusively sold at CAT dealerships.

CAT/Navistar engine alliance

Thanks for the info, I think our service manager did not do his homework. Nice to know I can get a reference to an article here on the DS. Thanks again.

I think your shop manager is actually spot on. It's costing too much for Caterpillar to keep up with the ever tightening emission regulations. It's going to cut 10% of their overall business, but they've got plenty of equipment that needs a motor (and plenty of people that need equipment).

To add to this, I also read that Freightliner will start offering the ISX as an option in 2010. I thought that was really dumb when they took away the options of having other engines besides a Mercedes or a Detroit (which will also be combined into one engine soon). Volvo tried that approach before, "If you buy our truck you have to get our engine". When sales dropped like a rock they changed their minds and offered the Cummins again. FedEX had a lot to do with that one, they have almost all Cummins powered Volvos.

I thought FedEx had O/Os doing that work, do they specify what truck you have to have right down to the engine? Or do you buy the truck from them? Do they fix it when it breaks?

FedEx Freight that is. The expediting part is O/O and they are on their own for repairs. We had a guy bring some into our shop to get some work done, he owned four himself.
