cold start cummins Not so good Help!

My 1996 Dodge Cummins was starting great. Then? one morning. Turned on the key, glow plug said start. Hit start and she fired right up. Ran for 30 seconds and died. Cranked for about 30 to 45 seconds and she kicked in. Since then every morning the same thing. I have tried plugging in the block heater, same thing, Tried giving some fuel(push the peddle down a little) Nothing changes. I know my old car had a cold start injector and a relay to make that happen, It did the same thing, change the cold start injector and all was good again. Is this true on the Dodge? Or what the heck I need it fixed before it gets winter again. Please anyone with an idea.

Sounds like air or something. You should try a dodge site. I know the 12v had a problem with the return lines leaking but I dont know if that caused runability problems. You can rule out the glowplug system(grid heater?) because it started and ran before it died. Diesels are pretty simple. Its either air or fuel generally. I suspect you have something wrong with your fuel lines, fuel pump or fuel filter. At least it isnt air locking when it stalls.

the return line will dry out, and get cracks, not big enough to leak fuel, but enought to get air, and then the fuel line leaks back, it replace the section of return line, and see how it goes, I would bet money, that is yuor problem.... the 12-valves shouldnt need to depend on the grid heaters, specailly this time of the year......

Have a mechanical check for that. Anyway check the mountings, vibrations can get though if mounts are dead. Also, take a look at your idling. If it's lower, you might want to push it up a little.

The fact that its a hard start after it stalls suggest to me its not the idle.

Im tellin yah, I'll bet money its your return line getting air......
find a chunk of hose that is rated for diesel/gas, and replace from fuel filter housing back to somewheres where it is easy to clip and replace, or replace the whole damned thing if you want, but 9 times out of 10, it happens where the hose makes the bends from around the fire wall to under the cab... I have replaced this line numerous times on different trucks in my shop..... your knuckles will not be happy with you for a while, but the skin will grow back!lol
